Hospitals in Rome
Hello,
Could anyone please share any information they have with me concerning hospitals in Rome. My mother was on a Mediterranean Cruise and was set to fly back home (to Canada) yesterday.
Unfortunately, quite suddenly her legs swelled up very badly and turned quite purple. She was admitted into a hospital in Rome yesterday. From the little bit of info that I have gotten at this point, they believe it is caused by blood clots in her legs.
The rest of the details are sketchy, but I would like to know if I should be at all concerned with the health care she is receiving. I'm sorry for my ignorance but I know nothing whatsoever of the health care system in Italy.
Any information you could share with me would be extremely appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

WHO ranks Italy number 1 in the world. It ranks the USA something like 26. I don't think you have any reason to be concerned about the quality of healthcare. My daughter ended up in the hospital in Italy a few years ago and I was absolutely blown away by the amazing care she got. Good luck to you.

I am italian and I can say that the medical assistance given in the major hospitals is good. The hospitals in Rome are as good as many others in Europe, so there should be no problem.
Good luck for your mother.

The subject of hospitals in Italy came up while I was in my Italian class. My tutor lived in Milan for 25 years. She said if she ever was seriously ill, but still able to fly, she would go to Italy for treatment. She claims the healthcare in Italy is far superior to America.

The usual treatment is Heparin or Lovenox followed by Coumadin in order to get her PT/INR to a therapeutic level. How will she get back home? It will be important that when taking a long trip she get up and walk around every hour or so.

As others have said treatment in Italy will be good.
My daughter was hospitalised in Venice and despite the conditions in the hospital appearing far inferior to ours in Australia, her treatment was tops! Not only that, but with recipricocity with Australian medicare, we only had to pay for the bed, not for the doctor. A bill was sent to us later. Travel insurance covered that anyway.
I hope you also have travel insurance.
Good luck.

Atilla, I lived in Italy for a year, and can vouch for the outstanding level of care the doctors typically exhibit for their patients.
I hope your mom is doing better--last year my mom also had a blood clot, and it was a really frightening and stressful time for my whole family, as she had to be rushed from an American nursing home to a nearby hospital. Your worries are naturally compounded by the fact she's in another country, and I can well appreciate that.
Please come back here and update us on what's going on. We care.

I cannot thank you all enough for your generous information and kind words.
As it stands now, she will have to be in Rome for at least one more week for treatment, but from what I gather, the swelling in her legs is slowly going down.
The Canadian Embassy has contacted the hospital and been most helpful with translation.
She will have to be flown home in a laying down stretched out position is the information that I am now getting from the Embassy.
Thank you once again for your input during this scary time for my family.
