Holland, first timers-itinerary suggestions?

It's been a while since I was in Holland, but I can
give you a little info. Sorry I can't think of the
airline right now, if it comes to me I will let
you know. I went to the Information Center across
the street from the rail station,(right in the center of
town) they are very helpfull, will call and find
you a place to stay of your choice, and price. There
are many places all in walking distance. I took bus
tours all over the country, as I was alone. You
could rent a car also. It's a very small country.
Hope I have been of some help.

8 days in the Netherlands could be spent in various ways, but I would spend it in Amsterdam. The VVV across from the train station (CENTRAL STATION) will help you with any kind of Hotel accomodations. Amsterdam is a very safe city, even at night. Don't hesitate to venture into the cafe's, or take in other night life. During the daytime take the covered boat trip on the canal (1600 bridges over canals in Amsterdam), visit the Anne Frank house and don't miss the churches and museums.

If you want to get out of Amsterdam for a couple of days, I'd suggest a trip to Maastricht, the place famous for the EU treaty. It's in the southeast corner of Holland, very near the German border. It's a beautiful town with a very nice pedestrian shopping area (not a mall, but part of the old city that's been closed to cars). There are also the requisite old churches, etc. Flights from Amsterdam are only 45 minutes.

Lynda,

Travelling to Holland can be done by KLM which is the national airliner. Try to get a package deal (flight and accomodation) which might be cheaper than doing it by yourself.
Moving around in Holland is very convenient because there's a superb public transport system (trains, buses).
Best to do is to buy the Insight Guide, beautiful pictures and good readable stories for preparing your trip. Once you are gone be sure you got the Lonely Planet or Fodor's guide with you.
What to do? Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans, Groningen, Maastricht. Be sure to do Holland Experience in Amsterdam. This is a 23 minute attraction which shows you a movie about the major highlights of Holland.

Any questions? Mail me.

Hi! Spent 2 weeks last summer in an apartment in Leiden, had a train pass and traveled each day
out to different. If you are interested in "china", a visit to Delft.
We spent time in Enkhuizen, Stavoren, Medemblik on the IJsselmeer. In Haarlem
You could visit The Corrie TenBoom house, she wrote
"The Hiding Place" and also visit a church with an organ that Mozart played at 10, Handel
played and Albert Schweitzer played. In Gouda, there also is a
cheese market, and Holland's longest church. Each was
a day trip from Leiden for us.....vey easy to get around by train
and bus. Enjoy! Jen

Can someone please tell me what the cheapest (most inexpensive) way of getting 2 adults and 2 children from London to anywhere in Holland. I have heard about flying or taking the ferry. Which is most convenient? Please help. Will be traveling during the month of August.
