Help with Piedmont Itinerary

I'm organizing a small group for Turin, Piedmont & Lake Orta September, 2014. We plan on spending a couple of days in Turin, then 4 nights in La Morra and another two in Lake Orta. We will actually be there during the Asti Palio, so one of our days in the Piedmont is accounted for. I will still have three full days for Piedmont activities while staying at La Morra and I would like to include some wine tastings, historical sites, shopping and eating.

1. Alba, Barbaresco & Neive--could that be done on one day?
2. La Morra, Barolo, Grinzane Cavour--another day?
3. Bra, Cherasco--a third day?

Is that all just too much to cram in? What would you eliminate or add? We will have a van or small coach.

Thank you

We did all of that easily in three or four days, visited wineries too. We stayed in Alba.
It is a beautiful part of the world, less touristed than many areas of Italy.

Many thanks. I have been to Piedmont once for a few days with my daughter. We were living in London at the time. It was hard to get her going in the morning so we didn't get as much done as we could have. Actually we stayed at the Villa Sampaguita but this group needs to be in a village at a hotel

If you had to pick two wineries to visit in the areas I outlined above which would they be?

No, we stayed at Villa Sampaguita for 9 days as part of their Palio d' Ati festival week and then ended at Lago Orta--one of our all time favs.

Right outside of Alba, in Madonna di Como, Pietro Rinaldi, www.pietrorinaldi.com, a family owned boutique winery.

I just returned from a trip to Piedmont and Liguria this past Saturday! As of the beginning of last week, the vineyards in the Barolo area had fully mature grapes on their vines, and was a beautiful sight. Those grapes are probably being picked now.

La Morra, Barolo, and Grinzane Cavour are about 10 km from each other. Seeing all 3 is easily done in 1 day unless you get too sloshed to drive. Since you're proposing to stay in La Morra, you'd really only need to do Barolo and GC as a daytrip. I would add Diana d'Alba as another part of the trip (it's ~10 km east of GC and ~10 km south of Alba). Look for a "vendita diretta" on the left side of the Diana-Grinzane road (as you travel toward Grinzane) just after leaving Diana. They sell WONDERFUL Dolcetto di Diana d'Alba wine! Unfortunately I forgot the name...

La Morra has a piazza at the highest point in town (warning: steep cobblestone streets) that looks out over vineyards and the town of Barolo. Grinzane has a castle on its highest point, which contains the city-run enoteca, and overlooks vineyards and Diana d'Alba. I'll upload a few of the pictures to my flickr account this weekend and let you take a look.

The Bra-Alba highway (SS231, I think) is a very heavily-traveled 2-lane highway with lots of trucks and sprawl. Most of the views leave something to be desired. The provincial backroads that lead to the hilltowns like Barolo, La Morra, etc., are much prettier and have almost no traffic.

Warning: If you drive from Turin to La Morra and take the A6 Autostrada to the A33, you will pay a whopping €5.80 in tolls despite going less than 40 km. The A6 toll is €4.90 and the A33 toll is an additional €0.90. For comparison, traveling ~15 km in Liguria from Lavagna to Rapallo on the A12 was only €1.10, and traveling ~150 km from Carru` in Piedmont to Chiavari in Liguria via the A6, A10, and A12 was only €13.00 total.)

After attending the Saturday Palio in Asti, our tour would take us to La Morra for Sunday - Wednesday. Will things be open or will I have a hard time finding resatuarants and things to do on those days?

I, too, just got about from a 4 week trip, primarily in the Piemonte. The Asti Palio is great, but on the third Sunday of Sept. On Saturday, there was a wonderful children's parade--over 1000 children in medieval costumes, drums, flags, etc. On Thursday evening is the flag tossing contest, also quite a nice spectacle.

No problem with finding restaurants and things to do on any day of the week.

I love that region. Spent 2 weeks there 3 years ago. La Morra is wonderful and very close to Barolo, Nieve, Barbaresco, Cherasco and Bra. Getting to each from La Morra are very short drives that would take you no time at all except they are often hilly, very small roads. So assume about 20-30 minutes to most of these places. The best part of this region is just driving around the hillsides and checking out little towns along the way.
I stayed at Art Suites in La Morra which was wonderful. Right in town and right above a Rocche Costamagna, a famous winery. And the Macarini Winery is right across the street. Listed several wineries worth visiting below. And we also loved the town of Monforte d’Alba., although it’s on a very steep hill so beware depending on the age and fitness of your fellow travelers.
While staying in La Morra you have to try More E Machina. This is a tiny restaurant in town with the most wonderful fresh pasta. Lots of good choices and also they will pour you a glass of any wine they have by the bottle so you can taste lots of great wine there too. It’s a very local place with few tourists and just wonderful.
