Help! What is the most exciting area for a hotel in Berlin?

I have to think fast because I think I may go to Berlin on vacation next week. What is the best and most lively area to stay? Any inexpensive ($80-110) hotel recommendations would be appreciated!

Richard, we enjoyed Potsdammerplatz. Were able to stay in the new Marriott there in October 2004 for $50 night through a Priceline bid. We don't usually stay in US chain hotels in Europe, but we loved this one, and the price was right. There was a line in the pavement right outside the door that designated where the wall was standing. The hotel was within walking distance of the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, the new Holocost memorial (which was still under construction at that time) and the new Sony center. Close to transportation too.

Are you going to be reporting in while you're in Berlin?

richard,

my preference would be to stay somewhere around the area of Hackesche Hoefe / Hackescher Markt. It is part of the Mitte district and there are a lot of bars around there. You'd also be centrally located to access most of the city's sights. There is an S-Bahn station right there.

Unfortunately I am not aware of too many hotels there apart from the Alexander Plaza and the Radisson SAS. I keep recommending the latter as it often can be booked for EUR 99.00 (if booked at least 5 days in advance) and as it's a steal at that. I only stayed at the Radisson, but the Alexander Plaza usually is very popular. A bit off Hackescher Markt, but located in the gentrifying district around Oranienburger Str., there is the Arcotel, an Austrian chain hotel, that appears to be pretty modern and is said to have some nice rooms. Looks fine from the outside to me and often has some pretty good room rates available.

Alternatively, the area around Savignyplatz in the Western center district of Charlottenburg might be nice, too. For hotels, you might want to take a look into Hecker's Hotel on Grolmanstr., which is in the area.
Also not far from it, Goethe87 is an apartment hotel that gets some favourable reviews, too. Mind you, I have never stayed at these properties, but recommend them upon favourable reviews from people I have heard and also from my impressions passing by.

I do like Potsdamer Platz for its strange feeling of change and resurrection. However, it is a bit touristy and not as authentic Berlin as the other areas. It is centrally located, though, and the subway would whisk you to other areas easily, should you desire that. That said, if you could get the US$ 50.00 deal on the Marriott as Betsy suggested you could jump on that. I did stay at the Marriott and found it reasonably nice. The downside is the would be the Priceline approach, you'd have to take to get such a low rate there - and you might end up somewhere completely differerent.

I forgot to include one more link:

http://www.hrs.de

They are a very reliable German consolidator on hotels and have a very informative webpage which lets you compare rates and properties rather easily. Photos and maps are readily available, too. I have no commercial interest in that side - you might as well just want to use it for gathering info.

And in the last bit it should read "site", of course.

Make sure you are aware of whether or not any of the hotels you end up considering are air conditioned as some aren't if that is any sort of issue for you.

Just checked at biddingfortravel.com, and these are the 3* hotels that PL uses in Berlin:

Top Concept Hotel
Marriott
Top Alsterhof Hotel
Holiday Inn Garden Court Kurfurstendamm

So if you bid at the 3* level, you'd have a very high probability of getting one of these hotels. Check out the reviews on BFT and/or TripAdvisor, and if you'd be happy with any of the above, you might consider bidding. Check out BFT for recent winning bids on 3* hotels in Berlin.

I would stay either around the Berlin Zooglischer station area because walking distance to the memorial church (kirche), Ku'Damm and other shops, restaurants, etc. Likewise, the Potsdammer Platz and Sony center area is hopping and lively. You will find American chain hotels there and also American restaurants (a Tony Roma's rib restaurant is there too).

I am still trying to figure this out. A German friend told me to stay near the Kurfurstendamm. I have been poking around and don't see a lot of hotels with availibility. I am staying July 11-16. Here and there I find a good rate but sometime I have found that one of the days is very expensive, for example i found a hotel at $89 a night but for one of the nights it was $750!

I am still looking. I still haven't got airline tickets yet. I am going (from glamourous Newark) with FF miles on Continental or a Star Alliance partner.

I like the the looks of the hotels HSV recommended but they are all booked.

Yes Betsy, I will be blogging while I am in Berlin.

Actually I have 2 other options, I am holding reservations for Montreal and i am also looking for flights to Prague. Some many decisions, so little time!

Check Accorhotels.com and see if there is a "Hot Deal" for your dates. Berlin has many excellent options.

The only discount I see is at the "Mercure Hotel Berlin An Der Charité" for $76 a night. What is this location like? I think its at checkpoint Charlie.

Richard, Google the hotel and find a site that has a map. It isn't at Checkpoint Charlie. It looks to be a little to the north of the center. Can't comment on the neighborhood.

Richardab, that's the hotel where my daughter and I will be staying in August. So far as I can remember from my 2004 trip, that area is fine, although I didn't stay there last time. The reviews on TripAdvisor for that hotel are very good. The location is very central.

...or the former East Berlin. At $76/night and rave reviews on Trip Advisor, this hotel sounds like a good idea if the location is acceptable to you.

I have pasted below a message I posted some time ago about staying in Berlin. But I have tried to google the name of the hotel, and all I get is my own message here at Fodor's... (I am probably mispelling the name of the hotel).

I spent a week in Berlin back in july/2000 and just loved it! Berlin has a very good public transportation system, you should have no trouble. I stayed in a very nice little hotel in the Mitte region, The Markisher Hof (I think that is how it is spelled). It had a marvelous breakfast, and it was near all sorts of trasportation.

Yes, I was mispelling the name. The correct name is Hotel Markischer Hof, on
Linienstrasse 133 | Mitte, Berlin 10115, Germany.

Below is the link to Trip Advisor with the reviews (mine including).
