We are going to London in October for 5 days (Thurs-Mon) specifically to visit an ailing relative in a nursing home in Chiswick (St. Mary's Convent). Closest tube station to the home is Turnham on the green/district line. We want to stay in an interesting neighbourhood elsewhere in the city. We've been there before and have seen most of the touristy things so want to explore London a bit. Is it feasible to travel each morning to Chiswick to visit a couple of hours then return to the city to have some fun? Any ideas which neighbourhoods would be interesting..Knotting Hill?

You might as well stay somewhere close to a District Line station - South Kensington, Gloucester Road or Sloane Square would be the obvious ones, about 10-15 minutes on the tube, without the changing you would need if you stayed near Notting Hill.

What is your budget? Somewhere around Sloane Sq would be wonderful. Or for more budget options - near Victoria.

Thanks for the tips. I agree that staying on the district line would be the best. We do not have an extremely limited budget but do want to be practical. We love staying in B & B's in neighbourhoods where we can poke around, shop, visit the local pub, eat in little bistro style restaurants etc. With that in mind which areas would be best to start looking at?

Any of those mentioned: as janis suggests, around Victoria/Pimlico (next stop along the District Line from Sloane Square).
