Help for staying in Beaune,Carcassone,Sarlat please

My husband and I are going to be in France for 18 days in October. In Burgundy we need a hotel in Beaune:in Dordogne we want to stay in Sarlat or Beynac; and in the Pyrennes we were planning on spending the night in Carcassone. We are having trouble finding anything on the internet. We are looking for 2 star or 3 star in or close to these cities. Would appreciate any help. We will have a car so we could stay out of town. Any other advice would be appreciated. We have been to Paris several times so need no help there. Thanks in advance. Debbie

Hi, Debbie,
I've become a broken record on this chain, but check out http://www.chateauxethotels.com/index_uk.lasso for nice places in all these areas.

You can visit Carcassonne easily as a daytrip from Toulouse, a fairly large city with lots of hotel choices. There is a wonderful little hotel within the walls of Carcassonne, but it's very pricey.

We stayed at the Hotel le Montmorency in Carcassonne, which is just across the street from the walled town, and had a nice stay. The price was right (300FF), although it was off season. Their address is 2 rue Camille Staint-Saens, 11000 Carcassonne. Phone 04 68 25 19 92; FAX 04 68 25 43 15.

Hope this helps.

Hi-- We also stayed at the Montmorency in Carcassone and found the rooms very small. Rick Steves actually changed the wording of his listing after we complained about it in 1995/6. But Carcassone is still wonderful-- I'm sure even more so off season.

Debbie, Look into "logis-de-france.fr" for a wide selection of small 1-3 star inexpensive hotels all through France. Owners usually speak English. Eight of ten reservations for our trip next month were made through them. I saw pictures of three of them, and they look impressive. The highlight of them will be Hotel Chabrol *** in Brantome which we saw last time as we were passing through. Rates for two people 300-420 FF. Frommers did an article on Logis de France a week or two ago and praised the organization. Ron

One of the best places to stay in SARLAT is the CHATEAU DE PUYMARTIN Tel 5-53-592997, fax 5-53-298752 It is a true small castle with towers and crenellations looming over the landscape of hills & forest 5 miles west of Sarlat. Your host will be Comte & Comtesse Henri de Montbron.
They only rent out two very large rooms w/ canopy beds in medieval style or Louis XVI style(FF 750/US $ 125 incl tax & breakfast only). Access to explore the rest of the castle when you stay there.

The second choice is La Couleuvrine which is a member of the Chateau et Hotels independent www.chatotel.com.
Rooms are smallish to medium, very simple but the hotel is part of the surviving old gatewall of Sarlat. It was a 14th century residence where the guards used to stay since it is buttressed by the Tour de Defense. The room on top of the tower is large with bathroom & a private deck/walltop to drink at night under the stars. However the tower-room has a slight musty smell. Most of the regular rooms have balconies(no smell but bedsupport is old) Very reasonable at FF 240 - 340 ($ 40 - 60). Great location(old town) all the sights & cafes are just a block away. I would call this place charming & cheap.Nice lady, helps if you speak a little French. Fax 5-53-312683, tel 5-53-592780. Sarlat is quite pleasant & charming to stay plus a lot of good restaurants.

We were in Burgundy last summer and spent three nights in Beaune at the Auberge Bourguinon (I think that's the name), which was great. It's a 2 or 3-star place with a very nice restaurant on the ground floor, friendly staff, good location. I wish I could give you more information about it, but I seem not to have retained much. Beaune was a charming place and I think you'll enjoy it.

In Beaune we stayed in town at Hotel des Remparts, a restored manor house. Easy walking to all the sites, very friendly with interior courtyards. They have a webstie at www.webstore.fr/hotel-remparts. Parking was either on the street or in a nearby garage (extra). I believe they are a 2 or 3 star, no restaurant, but plenty near by.

Supplementing my earlier post, here's more information about the Auberge Bourguignonne in Beaune:
Auberge Bourguignonne
4, Place Madeleine
21200 Beaune
03.80.22.23.53 - TEL.
03.80.22.51.64 - FAX
Also, across the street from it (diagonally to the left as you leave the hotel) was another nice hotel, the name of which I've forgotten. Either would be very nice, I think.

Our favorite hotel in Beaune is Hotel Le Cep. Charming, convenient (you can walk to everything), and each room is named after a different wine. Excellent service including parking, moderate prices; helpful staff.

Hello Debbie. We just returned from Burgundy. We stayed at La Cep in Beaune and loved it. Since you have a car, you might not be interested in that it's in the middle of town, but we liked being able to walk to the markets and restaurants. It's a 4-star, and all the books say it's expensive, but it's pretty affordable considering how strong the dollar is to the franc. I also recommend riding bikes to some of the vineyards rather than driving. It was a wonderful experience. Have a great time--

We've loved the Chateau de Chorey-les-Beaune, just outside the city of Beaune (for quick trip into town) and easy access to the Autoroute entrance and exit ramp. Absolutely peaceful; views of the Cote d'Or vineyards, as well as their own - yes, this is a working domaine. Jacques Germain is the proprietor and owner. The chateau has towers and a moat. Breakfast is lavish, with fresh eggs and orange juice, in addition to the breads and jams.

We were in Carcassone 2 years ago and stayed in Hotel du Donjon 1-800-528-1234 in USA and Canada - email: hotel. [email protected].
Best value in the moderate range in Carcassone, actually in the walls. Frommers France '99 shows as 390-465F.

Hotel des Remparts, also in Carcassone is in the center of town and nicely priced. fax 04-68-72-73-26
Carcassone is very small. Stay within the walls if you can and stay overnight so you can see and enjoy the town after all the tourists leave.

Hope this helps.
Iris
Frommers france '99 shows as 300-330F
