We used the Hotel Machiavelli In Florence and were happy with it. It is fairly close to train station (we walked from station to hotel) and the rooms and service were good. Had decent breakfast as well. Good location to all the sights. The link is
http://www.firenze.net/atlantic/welcome.html

We just stayed at the Hotel San Francisco on Viale Lombardia. It's a solid 2 star about a 12,000 lira cab ride from the station. I think we paid 160,000 lira. The neighborhood's not much---we arrived in Milan late and left early for a flight out of Malpensa.

We stayed at the Hotel Bristol, which is very close to the station. Decent hotel with an excellent breakfast.
website: www.hotelbristolmil.it
email: [email protected]

I also posted a simular question here and on other forums for a 3* hotel *close* to the train station for last March. From the replies I ended-up choosing the Hotel Canova. I liked the hotel very much (no regrets), my only complaint was I thought the buffet b'fast was alittle skimpy. The room was very nice and cheery (alot of wood, elevator, tv, desk, minibar, nice bathroom with a half-tub & shower, I had no problems with noise even with a front facing room. It's 300m from the front of the station, and easy too do with wheeled luggage. The Piazza and crosswalks (curbs) were "wheel-friendly". The Metro entrance is atop the street the hotel is on (100M). www.hotelcanova.com/ if you have any problems contacting them you can also book thru www.venere.com/ but you might get a better price dealing directly with the hotel. HTH Regards, Walter
My humble apologies. For some reason I misread this post and thought is referred to Florence. So my advice on the hotel was pretty worthless for Milan, however, if in Florence the one I mentioned is good. Again, sorry for the slip up - I will be more careful in the future...(I am surprised no one jumped on me for being such an idiot!).

We decided to "treat" ourselves to a luxurious hotel on our last nite in Italy and stayed at the Michaelangelo which is directly across the street from the central station in Milan. It had a whirlpool, marble heated bathroom floors, the breakfast was exceptional, etc, etc. and the cost was not that great. We had a corner suite on the top floor for 4 people for 640,000 lire. It was definitely worth the splurge.
