Well, you have heard of the terrible earthquake that shattered the region, haven't you? Basically, L'Aquila is one of Italy's nicest middle-size towns, but it will take more than just a few years until its former glory is going to be restored.

The Clooney film was shot in Abruzzo, but I don't think any of the filming was done in L'Aquila.
The film was apparently shot in other Abruzzo locations, including Sulmona, Castel del Monte, Pacentro, and Anversa degli Abruzzi.
I spent about ten days in Abruzzo in May of this year, including four days in Sulmona, a beautiful, small city completely surrounded by mountains. I didn't visit Castel del Monte, but I rode my bike from Sulmona to both Pacentro and Anversa. They are both very nice medieval towns, and the road going through Anversa is quite dramatic, with narrow gorges, tunnels, and views of tiny villages perched high in the surrounding moutains (fun biking).
I love Abruzzo, and I highly recommend it as a travel destination, but as franco mentioned, it will probably be a while before L'Aquila itself is ready for visitors. I did actually spend a day in L'Aquila this year, to see the Giro d'Italia bike race, which had a stage finish in L'Aquila as a show of support for the earthquake-stricken area. I was there covering the race for a cycling website, and the building in which they had set up the press room looked to me like one of the few buildings in the immediate area that was habitable. It was very sobering to see so many damaged and destroyed buildings, closed roads, and mounds of rubble. I hope to visit L'Aquila again someday, in happier circumstances.

Clooney picked the area as a setting because of the earthquake. He wanted to help boost tourism in the region following the devastation
