Has anyone unlocked the Nokia 3410 from Mobal?
I just received the Nokia 3410 from Mobal (the $29 phone mentioned on several threads here).
I cannot figure out how to unlock it. I have "the" code, but I cannot get it entered correctly.
I have 2 codes and am told that the 2nd one may not be necessary. But they both start and end with a #. I can get the 1st number sign to work but the last one will not work. I push the button but nothing appears. I can start typing in the 2nd code with the "pw" but not the #.
Any clues.

livvie. Try to do a search for Travelnut. I know that she was having difficulty unlocking her phone although others have been successful at it.
I do not know if she resolved her problem.
If worse comes to worse and you cannot do it, I think there are services you can pay fo that will unlock it.

OK- flummoxed once again.
I got an unlock code from Mobileliberation.com for the Mobal Nokia 3410.
I took the SIM card out, then powered on the phone.
I entered the code as instructed, #pw+11111111111+1# (fake number).
Supposedly, the second I hit the last # the phone was supposed to respond with a message, either "code error" or "restriction off".
However, NOTHING happened. No response, good or bad, just an open screen.
I keyed in the code one more time (so 2x so far), and again, no response.
So then I put in my T-Mobile SIM, and the screen said "SIM not valid". AARGH.
I am a very literal person - was I to press any other key following the last # ?
Is it possible the T-Mobile SIM is not usable in this phone, but I'll be able to use a France SIM later on?
I'm asking you guys all my questions before I try talking to Mobileliberation. Let me know what you think. Thank you!

I hit the # sign, then used * for the pw+ (I was able to see the letters/characters pw+ on the screen as I pushed the *).
Then I pushed each number of the code, ending with the **1# (+1#)
So what I keyed would be:
#*** **** ** 1111111111 **1#
(without the spaces)
The display does not retain all the numbers/characters - as I key each one in, it briefly displays then disappears, so there's no opportunity to check what was keyed. My reading says that the # is the last thing to key or push and a response should immediately follow (so no need to press "Send" or anything like that).

Well, I am either hopeless or my phone is "unlockable"... I got a second set of codes to compare to the first set... Had 3 possible codes from Mobileliberation and 2 codes from unlockme - the 2 codes matched the 1st and last codes from Mobileliberation, so I entered those 2 codes as one string, hit the ending #
and NOTHING HAPPENED!! No responses at all.
My T-Mobile SIM is still not valid.
That makes 4 tries so I am stopping now...might go to a store in Paris and 'see' if a local SIM will work, otherwise, forget it, I will just use Mobal's SIM - we aren't planning to use but for emergency or if we need to communicate while separated.

Hi trav,
>I will just use Mobal's SIM - we aren't planning to use but for emergency or if we need to communicate while separated.<
You will get about 20 min of emergency phone calls for the cost of a new SIM card.
I hope that you don't have that many emergencies.

I know, Ira, but can't unlock the phone to get a different SIM. Only have one try left or it will be 'unlockable' (except by cable, I suppose). I'm going to insert my T-Mobile SIM once we are in Paris just to see if I still get 'invalid sim' message. If I don't then I will buy a local sim/ if I do, then we'll rely on Mobal for now. xyz123 pointed out that I could fall back on a cable unlock, but it will cost much more, maybe more than the phone itself..

Travelnut. I recently took a phone to Portugal that was locked.
The phone was given to me but purchased in Australia and I just could not find out anything about unlocking it here. It was a Samsung.
When I arrived in Portugal, I took it to a phone store in the first town we visited. At the Lisbon airport, I was told at the Vodaphone store that they could not unlock it, but it was easily done.
Anyway, I never noticed so many phone stores in Europe as I did this time as we always used phone cards before.
I went to a general phone place that sells alk kinds of phones and cards. For 25E the man unlocked my phone and provided me with a SIM with 10E of call time. Incoming calls were free and outgoing were .39E during the week and ,20E on the weekend.
Now, I did not have the number before I went, but that was easily and cheaply called to my parents and children.
I topped up the card at any phone store once the phone was unlocked and the SIM was registered. You pay for 10E of calls and that is what I got.
I felt that 15E was not a bad price to pay if you can live with not knowing the number ahead of time.
The only problem I had was trying to change my number with CallBack World to the cell phone number from my home number once I was I was in Portugal.
The guy at the store knew exactly what he was doing and the phone worked like a charm.
This could be a solution for you.

I got it!!!
I think I may have been leaving out a + sign at the end.
I did some research on the unlockme site, downloaded one of their calculators. After finding all the info I needed I generated the codes (they ended up being the same ones someone on the forum gave me)and I noticed that when I copied the codes into my notebook I did not copy them with the + sign in front of the very last number.
When I very carefully typed in the code again being sure to use the + in front of the last number; as soon as I hit the # I got the large Restriction Lifted (with a huge check mark) message.
I even took the sim card out of my current US only cell phone and put it in the 3410 and it works. I can see my phonebook and menus. I cannot make a call obviously but it works.

Well, great then..it IS just me.
I had 3 codes from one source, and 2 codes from another source. These 2 codes matched the first and last of the 3 codes.
Didn't matter - the final # did not yield any message, good or bad. Nothing.

Travelnut...
The good news as long as you didn't get the code error message, it doesn't count against the 5 unlocking tries you have with the unlocking code before it becomes necessary to use a cable!
I don't know if you're trying it with a sim card in or out...maybe you should do the opposite. (If it's in, then do it with it out, if it's out then do it with it in)...If you bring it to an unlocker they will be using the same calculator as you have so you might as well try.

Have you tried to post your problem on the forums at unlockme? They seem to have quite a few people who know how to do this.
I did a search over there on the 3410's and found 2 pages of posts, several people had trouble; most were able to work it out.

Sorry to butt in, but I'm new to this whole cell phone thing since they have just recently become available where I live.
I have also been wondering about this unlocking business. I have a Nokia that uses a prepaid SIM card and I have had no problem buying another SIM card and using it in the US without having to "unlock" the phone or do anything differently. Does this mean that I will also have no problem buying and using a SIM card in Italy or other countries in the EU?

I meant to add that the phone was purchased in the West Indies and the SIM cards I get here can only be used on three local islands. Don't know if anyone can help me, but my local phone company doesn't know (suprise, suprise) so I thought I'd try here.

Hello, I worked on unlocking my phone before I left for Paris and thought I had done it. I wrote about it several times on Fodor's. However, on arrival it was still locked. My apartment owner took me to a shop near the apt. and they unlocked it for 10 euros. He had a SIM that he let me use in my phone. I just purchased the minutes for it. I did use the original mobal SIM when I first arrived and to check on my shuttle van when leaving. The O2 card provided by mobal worked fine. The one problem with the French SIM is that I had some problems understanding the prompts since my French is limited. I asked a neighbor for assistance once and my waitress another time. When I return in Sept. for Paris, Normandy and Brittany I will purchase my own SIM.

I hope mine is really unlocked. Like I said I was able to put my Nextel sim chip in it and it came up so I could see all of my phonebook lists. Before "unlocking" it I got an invalid sim message.
I have ordered an Italian sim chip (my husband really has to know the number before we leave for business reasons). When that arrives I will try it and see if it can read it and if I can program in numbers.
