Greve in Chanti-getting there

We will be staying in friends in Greve. I think we can fly into Florence. From there can we hire a limo, take a bus, train? We don't want to rent a car. Advice anyone?

There is no train. The bus is your best option.

"It is also possible to reach Greve by SITA bus from Florence. The bus station is 100 yards to the left of the Railway Station (SMN). The trip takes one hour. There are two routes, via Grassina and via Ferrone. The Grassina road is the "Chiantigiana". (IE The main road)

"In summer, from mid-June to the end of July, there is a bus connection from Florence to Sienna through Greve on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It passes through Greve at 8.30 am and takes another hour to reach Sienna. For the timetable, ask at the SITA station in Florence or at the outlets in Greve that sell the tickets (e.g. Café Lepanto, Piazza Matteotti). In other seasons, you have to return to Florence and take the express bus via the motorway to Sienna."

The website from which I copied this continues:

"TAXI: Use of a taxi to transport you to your agriturismo is a fairly expensive option, but not excessively so in most cases because it can be extremely convenient. For example, the fare from Florence to Greve in Chianti is about 60 to 65 Euros - the same route is a one hour bus ride. Note that this is double fare because you pay for the driver to return empty to his base. Most taxi meters can be clicked to double rate so that you pay what you see on the meter. It's important that you have a good idea (preferably a map) of where you want to go because drivers are not unnaturally reluctant to drive through country lanes searching for a vaguely defined objective. Many rural addresses are in the form "Case Sparse numero xx" or "Loc. xxxxxxx" and only the postman knows what that means.

"An alternative to a normal taxi is a taxi with an NCC licence(Hire of car + driver). This means that the driver is allowed to quote a fixed price beforehand and these drivers often have very extensive experience of country roads and agriturismi. Arrangements to be picked up can be made before you leave home.

"Don't disregard the NCC option - often the price for transport for your family and all of your gear directly from the airport or station to your country accommodations will cost not much more than a combination of trains, buses and local taxi, but will be much quicker, more comfortable and with less risk of leaving a bag somewhere.

"We recommend Pasquale Pugliese's Chianti transfer service."

Well, unless your friends are alien pods, I have a feeling you'll be staying with them.

Florence's airport is reasonably close. There might be a bus to Greve. Hell if I know. A limo? I'm sure you could find one for the cost of a two-day car rental. But no car rental? Unless your friends offer their car or have a spare to loan you, you'll be completely reliant upon them to get you around. I love a great, hospitable host but I have my limits when it comes to taking full advantage of their time.

On the other hand, some friends don't mind the "we don't want to rent a car" types and the 24/7 visitors. That's not the kind of friend I wish to be.

You might find the bus schedules useful:

www.sitabus.it

http://www.acvbus.it/orari/365.pdf

There is the VOLAINBUS from the Florence airport direct to the SITA bus terminal in Florence for 4.50 Euros. Service is every 30 minutes. Otherwise, you can simply take a taxi there for 20-25 Euros, then connect to the SITA bus to Greve. The SITA bus fare to Greve is 3.10 Euros.

I can count a few things easier than taking this bus, but not many.

A private car and driver from the Florence airport to Greve will be very expensive. The SITA bus is very, very easy, convenient and comfortable.

The trip will cost you 7.60 Euros total by bus.

I wouldn't rely on a website that mispells Siena.
