Greece itinerary FINAL! Please feel free to critique.....

After much research and help from my Fodors and TA friends, we have finally finalized our itinerary... any more add-ons or suggestions would be appreciated. Here goes......

9/20 overnite Boston to Athens... arrive noon 9/21
9/21 Aegean Air (2:50pm) Athens to Santorini
9/21 til 9/26 - Santorini (Chelidonia)
9/26 til 9/29 - Naxos (Pension Sofi)
9/29 - transport to Athens (would prefer flight if available). Rent car for drive to Nafplios.
9/29 til 10/2 - Nafplios (Hotel Aetoma)
10/2 til 10/3 - Athens (hotel not booked yet, but strongly considering Athens Gate).... depart for States 10/3 in the A.M.

Again, please feel free to comment on accomodation choices, itinerary or whatever.... any suggestions on day trips to around Nafplios? I know a majority will say a day in Athens is nothing, but preferred by our party. Figured our last nite we could have a good view of Acropolis from hotel and hang a little bit in the city. Any info on Athens Gate is welcome. Also...... if anyone can provide flight info from Naxos to Athens for 9/29 and recommend a rental car company that would be great. Thanks again for all of the help.... keep it coming. Cheers.

Friends on another forum report that the best rental car prices come from Budge -- IF and WHEN you use a particular website... Not just Budgetcarrentals .gr but this one: --http://www.budget-athens.gr/?gclid=COKUzp30k58CFdx05QodUkGLfw
... it's the special site of the Athens afiliate, and offers special discounts.

The guy who recommends this is half-Greek goes to Greece 3 x a year and always uses this. He would not be repeat customer if it were not reliable.

As people have explained, the Naxos service is in transition... the contracts run out Mar 31, doubtless Olympic Air (its new name) will be the line, since it has the only airplanes of the right size to serve Naxos & Paros. Doubtless the timetable will be much as in the past -- one flight per day, early afternoon. HOwever the schedule is not posted yet on its website. http://www.olympicair.com/Home.aspx?a_id=549 I am sorry but you must be patient about this ... after all, your date is 7 months away.

Since you've already decided to spend 1 day in Athens I won't comment on that other than to say we're in group that thinks 3 full days isn't enough. Just too much to enjoy.

As to the Athens Gate, we've stayed there twice and really liked it. Great location. Updated modern rooms and baths alhough on the small side. IMO you won't find a better view of the Acropolis than from its rooftop bar/restaurant, which also has excellent food. The breakfast buffet was included in our room and had most anything you could imagine - very good value. Staff was exceedingly helpful. The one caveat I'd mention - it's on a busy street, so if you sleep light ask for a room on the backside (which interestingly are usually cheaper). Good choice.

I would spend less time on Santorini, and more time on Naxos and in Athens.
Napflion makes an excellent base to explore the antiquities nearby, the Mycenae, Tyrins, Corinth, Epidavros.

travelerjan... thanks much for flight and rental info. Olympic does offer one flight from Naxos to Athens so that works out well. dfr.... thanks for the info on Athens Gate. I know the Athens visit is short, but this is pretty much a "chill out" vacay and no one was too crazy about hanging around the city.... basically most interested in seeing the Acropolis and a few other sights before we depart. HappyTrvlr.... thx for recommendations on places to see near Nafplios. As far as how long to spend where... I got mixed reviews on Athens..... some people say 3 nites in Santorini is enuff, some say a week. I guess it's preference. I'm sure if we feel cooped up on Santorini we can ferry somewhere for the day???? Either way I think we'll manage to have a good time. Thank you friends.

No there is not really anywhere you can go for a day trip from Santorini, look at a map. And as for "mixed reviews" on Athens, who provided them. Perhaps people with no interest in history, but it certainly is up to whatever you prefer, as you say. Whatever you choose, You should have a wonderful FIRST trip (Greece can be addictive).
