Greece experts: August greek ferry - I've left it too late!!

Hi All,

We are arring into Athens on Wednesday, 23 August. We were planning to take the overnight ferry (Hellenic Seaways) from Piraeus-Santorni, leaving at 22.00. All the online tickets have sold out. Do you think it is possible to just turn up without a ticket and travel on deck?

Many thanks
AP

Hi

Have you tried flying? Try Olympic or Aegean websites. You'll be there in 30 minutes and not that expensive.

Good luck.

Unless you try a travel agent?

The ship cannot possibly be fully booked a month in advance. According to the Greek government's web site, the overnight ship to Santorini on this date is the EXPRESS SANTORINI which has very few cabins - just 50 according to the owners. The number of deck tickets is limited to the capacity of the ship which, according to Hellenic Seaways' web site, is 1915. I doubt whether the ship will be absolutely full on a Wednesday evening, but there are alternatives.

Thank World and Geoff. I am very suprised the ship is already full as well - we were hoping to save a night in a hotel in Athens and arrive in Santorini early rather than flying. I'm not against flying but we were really hoping to get on this ship..

Geoff, do you think I should hold off a couple of days and see if Hellenic puts more seats back on their system?

Having just booked 2 tickets to Santorini on Aegean Air last night in a panic (with an annoying 4 hour stopover in Athens Airport), I checked Hellenic Seaways and they had availability!!!!! But ship is now the Express Aphrodite and not the Express Santorini. Have they laid on an extra ship?

I called Aegean Air and they said I can refund my tickets. How good is that??

The EXPRESS APHRODITE seems to have replaced the EXPRESS SANTORINI. The 'APHRODITE is a bigger ship, but neither was built as an overnight ship; the 'APHRODITE has only three cabins, according to the owners.

Thanks Geoff - guess we're in for a luxurious journey! But this is a far better option. My husband has never had the Greek ferry experience and this option gives us a bit of time to have a look round Athens before we make our way to the port.

And Aegean have already issued my refund!!
