Good guide for St. Petersburg
We just returned from three days in St. Petersburg on the St. Peterline's visa free ferry. In order to maximize our time, we hired a private guide, Olga Miheyeva. She was recommended by djkbooks who posts here (and I enjoy his/her posts). Olga teaches English during the school year and is a certified, licensed guide during the summers and other off times.
We booked her for one day (8 hrs) with a driver/car and then the next for half a day, walking. Her rates were comparable to the big tour companies but it was just my friend and I on the tour. We corresponded by email, we told her the main things we wanted to see, and she did the rest.
She was good to stop at any sight we saw and were interested in, she knew all the history, she took us around and showed us many more interesting things than we could ever have done on our own.
If you need her email, here it is . . . [email protected]. We really enjoyed our time with her and really appreciate djkbooks' recommendation. FYI, I cross posted this on TripAdvisor.

Hi, sandy_b and thanks for the guide info. I'm new to the Asia forum so forgive any silly questions. Did your ferry depart from Helsinki? May I ask about your flight? How many hours did it take to get to, where? Helsinki?
My bucket list includes the Hermitage and I'm considering combining St. Petersburg with Sweden. I'd appreciate any info, TDu

TDudette:
Don't miss the Hermitage, is fabulous, but the Church of the Spilld Blodd, or the Church on the St Peter and St Paul Island, are also great. Plus the palaces outside the city, one of them includes the marvelous Amber room, and unbelievable rooms with plenty og gold. The other Palace has beautiful gardens that merit a visit.
We were in S.P. Last september and found it really great.

Hey TDudette, didn't you beat me at WWF once?
Yes, St Peterline "Princess Maria" overnight ferry left Helsinki approx 7:00 p and arrived StP about 9:00 a.
I typed up my detailed (very detailed) trip report and would be happy to email it to you, it has everything you want to know about the trip. Let me know at [email protected].
Happy travels,

I just found this too--planning for July 2016. Sandy_b, I looked for but can't find a trip report by you on St. Petersburg. I see where in Oct. 2013 you offered to email it to someone, so I just tried to email you to ask for it. Alas, I got a message that your email address is invalid. Do you have a new address? I would love to get your details of the 3 "visa-free" days in St. Petersburg, or the link to it if it's online. Many thanks!
