Getting to Tintern Abbey

My wife and I will be in London for a while this summer and we'd love to sidetrip to Wales. We're not planning on renting a car, and really don't want to. Without the use of a car, how does one reach Tintern Abbey from either Cardiff or London? I've looked on the web and can't seem to find any tour companies offering day-trips to Tintern from either city, but it seems to me that this would be a popular thing. Does anyone know of any day tours? Or can we reach Tintern by train or bus? How? Thanks for the help.

Train to Chepstow, which is 6 miles south of Tintern. Then bus to Tintern (Chepstow - Monmouth route 69). Alternatively, I imagine a taxi wouldn't be much more than £10. The walk along the River Wye btween Chepstow and Tintern is supposed to be very pleasant.

This is not a "tour" the commercial companies would offer. it would more likely be as part of a multiday trip through Wales and the border counties.

As said, the best way is take the train to Chepstow and taxi or bus to Tintern. However, there is a tourist information office in Chepstow and they might offer short tours to the Abbey.

This would be a long day - but both Chepstow and Tintern are definitely worth a visit. Chepstow Castle is wonderful and, of course, so is Tintern.

Thank you, Ron and Janis. In your advice to train to Chepstow first, do you mean from London or Cardiff? Is either possible (Cardiff-Chepstow or London-Chepstow)? I've read that the Welsh train system is more limited than the English. Thanks again for the help.

I have not taken the train since I usually have a car in the UK - but do know that you can get to Chepstow from Paddington. I am sure you have to change at least once. Perhaps in Bristol or possibly in Newport.

The Rail Track website will give you the schedules and where you have to change trains. Just plug in Paddington and Chepstow and it will provide all the info including fares.

Rob, I've only done it from Cardiff - its like 45 minutes or less. It would be an easy day out if you were staying in Cardiff. Service is frequent. As Janis says, the trains leave London from Paddington and you will have to change at least once, maybe twice, probably Swindon and Gloucester. Check schedules at www.Qjump.co.uk.
