Getting from Heidelberg to Rothenburg
What is the easiest way to get from Heidelberg to Rothenbeug-ob-der-Tauber?
We really don't want to rent a car, but it doesn't look like there is an easy train connection.
Any reliable bus or shuttle service?

Europabus operates the tourist route "Castle Road" coaches. Leave Heidelberg 8:35, get in around noon, direct bus service with no changes. www.europabus.de

I looked up the schedule on www.bahn.de. Unfortunately, the schedules on dispaly are good only until October 10 (when the time changes in the EU)
There are three options, all involving several changes of trains. The first one is as follows; Leave Heidelberg at 09:14, arrive Stuttgart at 09:53; lv. Stuttgart at 10:07, arrive Ansbach at 11:50; leave Ansbach at 12:10 arrive Steinach at 12:31, lv Steinach at 12:36 (12:36PM). Steinach isn't a big station, so 5 minutes are OK, if trains are on time. Arrive Rothenburg ob der Tauber at 12:50.
I'm sure that by mid-Oktober you can get the winter schedule on the above website. When asked, for Rothenburg enter Rothenburg Bahnhof.

Well, we finally decided to rent a car and make a nice day of the drive, but the car rental return office is in Ansbach, not Rothenburg.
SO.....next question .....how do we drop off the car in Ansbach and then get to the hotel in Rothenburg? Can we get a taxi or do the hotels have shuttles? We will be staying at the Burg Hotel (along the old city wall).

It's an easy train ride from Ansbach to Rothenburg. You might be able to arrange for someone from the Burg hotel to pick you up at the train station in Rothenburg (although the Burg Hotel is pretty close to the train station if I remember correctly).

Christmas in Rothenburg is something that I have long wanted to do, but it will have to wait until a few other travel priorities are satisfied. I think you will have a great time.
One word of caution about the drive between Heidelberg and Rothenburg - the scenic route can be congested with slow-moving lorries and even tractors. The rural roads are windy and provide only occasional opportunities for passing. Even if you're not in a hurry, these vehicles, or the string of cars behind them, will clutter your view. We drove those rural roads in the opposite direction a few years ago and the long lines of cars behind each slow-moving vehicle are hard to forget. It might not be so bad in the winter, however.
On the other hand, driving is the ideal way to visit the Romantic Road. In addition to Rothenburg, fairly well-preserved towns like Dinkelsbuhl and Nordlingen are worth visiting. The road neatly conforms to the contours of land that has been farmed for centuries. we were there in the spring when the bright yellow rapeseed crops were blooming. Winter probably adds its own unique beauty to the area.
