Geezer driving in Ireland
A friend says nobody 75 or over can drive in Ireland. Can that be true? My guidebooks neglect to say that, though they say geezers can't sign up for a car rental.
Also, we three old folks are planning to buy air tickets Cork-London on line. Prices are quoted, but it is not clear (to me, anyhow) about whether there will be taxes, airport fees, etc., tacked on, either on purchase or when we check in. Anybody reporting nasty surprises in that regard?

You need to check with your rental company as this issue is not the law it is a commercial issue for the rental companies

no, it isn't true, if you are Irish, you have to have a medical certificate to be driving over the age of 70. Car rental companies won't often rent to age 75 or more, it varies by company but no one does over age 79 from what i've read.
Maybe someone could help you more with your tickets if you said which airline. I have never been surprised by any ticket as those taxes and fees must be added on before you buy it, it can't be after (and how would they collect the fee if you'd already paid for the ticket? If you mean surprised that there are fees in the final price that were not in the base fare, so what. IN the US, there is one airline I unfortunately recently bought a ticket on that has a sneaky baggage fee which is not disclosed very well up front (United). I had to buy from them for my route. Yes, I knew there was a baggage fee on top of the ticket (very small print in one location on the website for purchase), but for some bizarre reason they don't tell you exactly what it is and I understand it varies by whether you pay at the airport or by checking in online, but they don't allow you to prepay by choosing it up-front like any normal airline with those rules does. This is very annoying as I will be in a place where I cannot check in online.
But I don't think legally an airline cannot include taxes and fees in the final price (baggage is optional, I agree, I just want the option of purchasing it in advance) when you buy the ticket. I might be wrong, but don't know of any example of that.

I've been checking about renting a car in Croatia and/or Slovenia and was told by AutoEurope that in one of those countries, the car rental companies have 70 as the upper limit and the other has 80. I can't recall which was which. When I'm ready to take a trip there I will call again and check them out.
It was pretty reassuring to know that in any country there's a limit of 80. That means I've got 4 more years to drive there.
As to the rest of it, I think there's been a law passed recently that states that all taxes and fees have to be disclosed up front. If that's not the case, you can go through the process of buying the tickets without actually doing the final step of paying for them, then see what the cost will be.
