From London to Stonehenge without a car

I would like to visit Stonehenge while in London. Is it possible to do this on your own without a car or do I have to go through a tour company?

Thanks

Hi. Although I haven't done it yet (I'm planning a trip for winter), I intend to take the train (with my boyfriend and my sister) from London's Waterloo Station to Salisbury, which is the nearest town to Stonehenge. Then, you can cab it to Stonehenge - it's pretty close. Check out http://www.railtrack.co.uk for train times, it takes about 1 1/2 hours for this trip.

You can take the train to Salisbury and a bus from there to Stonehenge. Husband and I are headed for London next week, and we're planning to hook up with a tour company in London, just to avoid the hassle of checking timetables. The average bus tour seems to run around $75 and includes lunch and a visit to a few other sites.

I had always been one to visit such sites on my own, but a few years ago took advantage of a tour out of Salzburg to Berchtesgaden, Kehlsteinhaus, etc., and realized that sometimes it's just easier to let someone else do all the work!

Nora,

It is easy. We went with our kids a year ago. We took the train from Waterloo to Salisbury and at the Salisbury train station there is a bus to Stonehenge. We picked up tickets for the bus (it runs fairly frequently) right at the Salisbury station. But take the time to check out Salisbury. The town is very pretty and the Cathedral is a must see! Beautiful and historic. There is an original Magna Carta at the Cathedral. My family loved the town and the Cathedral, the kids found Stonehenge to be a disappointment. In their minds the stones were much larger than they actually are. We enjoyed seeing both sites.
