If you won't be seeing the Black Forest or The Mosel Valley and Rhine River Area and are just going straight to Paris the train would be best. You can find out about routes and prices at www.eurorail.com
Use the Alta Vista Search engine or try www.eurotrip.com.

Thanks to Cotton. www.eurotrip.com gave me all the info I need to evaluate the train situation. I'll probrably take the train. But can any one tell me about rental cars and paticularly insurance costs for them in Europe Driving offers more possibilities, but who wants to drive in Paris? The train offers the best convieniance, but there is little flexability. If rental car cost, plus insurance is cheaper I may opt for that, Then a day in Heidelberg, or along the romantic road is possible. Thanks again Cotton! John

Here are some websites for those wanting to rent a car in Europe: www.ricksteves.com/services/rrdrive.htm (very good) and www.europcar.com/english and www.drmide/egnl.htm (this is VW campers). We rented ours out of Amsterdam for $500 per week and it slept 4. Didn't use it every night but it sure came in handy for naps, picnics and those nights when rooms for 4 were hard to find-my husband would give us girls the room and shower and he and my son would sleep in the van-in the morning they would shower and go into the banquet or breakfast room and get a free Continental Breakfast and no one was ever the wiser. Shh.. don't tell. Also we rented from Braitman & Woudenberg in Amsterdam as insurance coverage was included in the price, along with maps, campground books etc. They were very nice to work with. Drove into Germany- no border checks or anything. German freeways excellent.
