Flying to Italy, what is a good ticket price?

Hello All!!
We are flying to Italy June 19 through July 2nd. I have been checking flight prices on a web site called www.airlineconsolidator.com and to date the best price has been around $900 but usually is closer to $1,100. I am wondering if anyone has used this company before and if so, what your experience has been. The thing that I like about their web site is that it allows me to price an open jaw ticket. We are flying into Milan and want to fly out of Florence (Chicago is our USA airport). What price should I jump at?? It is my understanding that flights usually go on sale in December?? Does anyone have a travel agent that they would recommend?? Is is possible to work with a travel agent that will watch for when the flights may go on sale? Sorry for the amount of questions - this will be our first trip to Italy!!! Thank you in advance for all of your help!!
Jenni

Jump on $850. Pounce on $750.

If you haven't seen anything under $900 by March 1, then take the first best thing you can find that fits your budget.

You need not feel like you have to have your tickets purchased by Dec 31.

Best wishes,

Rex

I am with you on those worries Jenvett, I posted about it a few weeks ago... Our trip is mid-to-late September, I have found a $640 from ROC, and I would like to book it, but my traveling companions want to wait...

Does anyone know of a website to see historical ticket prices? If I could see the deals I'm getting compared to those over the last year or two, I would have a feel for booking now versus waiting.

Jenvett - I won't make you feel any better about your prices, but I will tell you we went in 2002, almost to your exact dates, and flew for $490 each. We were psyched, BUT we booked after 9/11, and I think (assume) that is why we had such a deal!

Good luck, Kristy

I am going to Italy next September and have been trying to figure out the same thing. I think the best option is to fly from your U.S. airport to London and then take a discount European airline like EasyJet or RyanAir to Italy. You can buy two one way tickets on the European carrier to get your open jaw. Doing my flight this way I am looking at an airfare of $606 flying into Rome and out of Milan, versus about $1,100 buying the open jaw directly. Good luck!

I bought my tickets for next summer and paid $755.00 per person.
Personally I am quite satisfied with my purchase, considering that I live in Texas.I have an open jaw flight, SAT to FCO, and CDG to SAT.

Here's for a bargain (& lets not discredit low season)...
At the end of October I booked 3tickets leaving from JFK, NY in mid-December to Milan. Our return flight is from Rome at the end of December back to JFK.
We bought our tickets directly from an Alitalia phone representative for $371 roundtrip!
When we called in mid-November to see if we can change the dates, they said the ticket prices went up to double that amount.

While it is definitely worth looking into, and we have done it successfully, be careful when booking your overseas flight into a city like London and then relying on a carrier like RyanAir to get you to Italy or elsewhere in Europe. The prices can be excellent, but luggage can be a significant issue these days. BE SURE to check the fine print on luggage limits of Ryanair or other budget carriers and their penalties for going over or you may be in for a very rude shock.

You might want to check airfares in and out of Dublin, too. Aer Lingus has begun matching the prices of low cost air carriers to other major European cities. You can save several hundred dollars sometimes doing it this way.

Also, out of London, check British Air. Sometimes they run specials or are not significantly more than the low cost air carriers. And although they have a strict luggage limit, it is not quite as bad as Ryanair, etc.

Try Continental -We got tickets in July for vacation to Rome end of September - don't know where you are flying from but this was a direct flight from Newark NJ to Rome for $619 pp. I do not understand high and low season so that may have something to do with prices. Have a good trip

Echoing the experience of kismetchimera, this has been my experience - - 3 for 3 - - on travel in/out of Italy (though these were in September, nit June - - but anymore September seems to be as high priced as June): open-jaw into/out of France/Italy has been easier to find a good price than Italy/Italy.

Regrettably, the option of cheap air travel between France and Italy via volareweb.com is evidently not an option on the near-term horizon (who knows what tomorrow will bring?)

You can book open jaw tickets on the other major companies like Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity. Click Expanded search option, then multi-city itinerary. This is how I got a good fare for my trip into Rome and out of Venice.
