Florence Duomo walk to top of dome and museum

One of my dreams is to be able to climb to the top of the Duomo dome In Florence, but I also want to be realistic and thoughtful.

Are their railings on the 450+ steps to the top of the dome?

Knowing that it is a little narrow in places, are there places to rest on the way that won't hamper others making the climb?

Where is the ticket booth to get tickets for that walk and for the museum?

Thanks

If you Google "climbing the Duomo in Florence" and search images instead of regular search, you will get lots of pics.

I wouldn't climb on a hot day. But, otherwise, the views from the lantern and the chance to see from the inside how the dome was built are worth the exertion.

If possible, read this great book about the Duomo before you go. Paper, Nook and Kindle versions are available.

If it is your dream, go for it! but many of the same views are available from the restaurant terrace at the Uffizi and from the upper reaches of the Boboli Gardens, though you do have to walk uphill to reach some of them. Both have the advantage of having the Duomo itself in your field of view!

Go early in the morning to avoid the crowds and lines.

The view from the top of the campanile is stunning, with the Duomo close up in your view.

But it's quite surprising if you're beside the bells when they start to ring!

You can also get a lovely view over Florence (including the duomo) from Piazalle Michaelangelo. You can make the heartily walk uphill or take a bus or cab there. Especially nice at sunset.
