Flight booked to Salzburg for 7 days...now i need to find out what to do there?
Hello,
February blues made me book a cheap flight on impulse to Salzburg today where i've got 7 days to explore. I've never been to that area before, happy to train travel to save hassle driving, would ideally like to stay in 2 or 3 places. Does anyone have any recommended itineraries? Would appreciate any tips from past visitors? Thank you!

There are many posts and trip reports here about Salzburg, they will give you excellent ideas.
For start, Salzburg's old town, Schloss Hellbrunn (the castle, the trick fountains, the grounds and the seldom-visited Folk Art museum up on the hill). St. Gilgen. Berchtesgaden. Bad Reichenhall.
Will you have a car or are you relying on trains and postbuses? What is your budget? Have you been to Munich or Vienna? Both are day trip (or overnight) options...Munich is, of course, closer than Vienna.
Salzburg isn't just about history, it has some excellent modern sights, including Hangar 7 and its Ikarus restaurant and bars/cafe (very highly recommended). FYI, the MayDay bar at Hangar 7 was the first in Salzburg to go nonsmoking.

The Red Bull headquarters in St. Gilgen is a striking example of modern design.

Thanks very much for suggestions, I think we're going to train / bus it, and budget is moderate, not shoestring but nothing lavish. Been to Munich but not Vienna so will maybe travel there and stay a night or two.

You will not need 7 days for Salzburg.
Vienna is a good destination that has many places to visit when the weather is less than ideal.
The city of Linz is on the way. You might stop there for a day.
There are some interesting sights around Melk.
Munich is not that far away either.
In fact, it is about half as far as Vienna.

Salzburg is a great place to base your week. There are a number of other interesting things nearby like Berchtesgaden, Hallstat, Herren Chiemsee, Innsbruck, etc. You might want to rent a car for a day or two to ease your travel around the area.
