First Trip To Italy

We are in the planning stages of our first trip to Italy. We are planning to visit Rome, Venice and Florence. Would you recommend driving or a tour?

Neither. These "big three" major destinations connect so well, and so afforadably by train, there is hardly any reason to consider otherwise.

And I am one of the leading voices here on this forum FOR car or plane as an alternative to train, when it makes sense.

It doesn't make sense for R/F/V.

How many nights/days will you have? If it is more than eight, it seems a shame to not partake of some of rural Italy.

Best wishes,

Rex

Definitely do it by train. You will not want a car in Florence or Rome and can't have one in Venice. And, with a little time, you can plan the trip yourself. So much nicer to be on your own, doing the things you want to do, than to be following a tour group. Italy is a wonderful and easy place to tour on your own.

Neither. Set your own schedule and train between those cities!

Train is your best way, I have just been to Rome in June. I do suggest planning your own adventures, but I did take a tour while in Rome, and it does add a bit to the city. They know the history a bit better. If you have time, stop in smaller towns, you may stumble upon something wonderful.

I agree totally with everyone else thus far... take the train! Driving in Rome is a nightmare. Parking can even be a real challenge. And, for sure you don't need a car for Venice. Unless you are interested in visiting some of the smaller cities along the way to Florence, I wouldn't consider driving. Take the train and enjoy the scenery!

Hi Sonny,

You can easily do "The Big Three" independently on the train.

You will not need a railpass.
