First international trip

After years of delays I'm finally getting over to Germany in May to visit my relatives. After reading some messages on this forum, I decided on renting a car from sixT. I chose a "holiday car" package which includes some of the insurance coverages. Having never rented a car internationally, I'm looking for some reassurance that this "holiday car" package through sixT doesn't have some weird catch I missed. Has anyone rented with this program before? Any issues I should be aware of?

Thanks much

ochssk1 - I'm sure you'll have a great trip. I'm also sure there's someone here that can help you. But, the people who have rented with sixT will not know to open your message because the subject is a very generic "first international trip".

So, recommend reposting with a more specific title to be sure you catch the attention of those relatively few people who can help.

Call the 800 number on the back of your Visa or Mastercard and ask if they cover the CDW (Collision/Damage/Waiver) insurance on a car you rent on their card while you are in Europe. Mine does. It has saved me a bundle and given me a lot of piece of mind.

Driving is no problem in Germany but you need to do one thing before you try it. Get an Atlas with international signs and symbols. Become familar with them before you hit the road. It will make the experience more enjoyable.

As you have relatives there, have them exlain the parking rules and rules of the road to you also. This will also make driving more fun. There will be a small cardboard clock in your glove box. Have your relatives explain how to use that when you park. This and a few other things and you will be set to go. Enjoy!

Shouldn't ochssk1 acquire an International Drivers License also?

Here in CA one can obtain this through AAA even if they are not a member.

Any thoughts?
