Favorite place in Umbria
Hey Folks,
We're leaving for Italy next Friday and as part of our trip, we are driving from Rome to Greve-in-Chianti for 4 days. Does anyone have any favorite Umbrian towns that you would recommend to visit along the way? We have two boys (13 and 11) and our a rental car. Thanks in advance.

Orvieto is a good choice. So is Civita di Bagnoreggio. I think I've spelled that right. It's one recommended by Rick Steves. Worth checking out. www.civitainstitute.com/

Orvieto might intrigue the boys (with its Etruscan tunnels).
For something really dramatic, check out Pitigliano.
Why Umbria? It seems out of your way.
Why not the Mediterranean in July with teenagers? Have a swim. Drive up the coast as an adventure.

We were in a villa near Orvieto about a year ago and loved it. We also took day trips to Perugia and Assisi. Although we enjoyed both immensely, I'd think that the boys would enjoy Assisi more than Perugia.
Going from Rome to Greve-in-Chianti I'd think that Orvieto would most likely be a mid-route destination, although I'd much prefer spending at least one night in transit.

Hands down...Orvieto...for convenience and because it is a very interesting town, has the most beautiful Cathedral in Italy and the Etruscan ruins will wow your sons. It is compact and can be explored in a half a day.

Orvieto is perfect - you will drive right by it as you take the A1/E35 north. Park down below, take the funicular up to the town, visit the cathedral, have a bite to eat, wander the cliffs...heaven!

Assisi is a hands down winner, with a magic ambiance, but I want to put in a vote for Perugia, which has on the hilltop a pleasant main street and a sense of the medieval which is hard to beat. One or two good places to taste wine as well.
