Ever watch film and movies to prepare for a trip?

We've been renting movies for a trip to Western Europe (by UN definition). So far our list has included:

Shirley Temple Collection: Heidi
The Sound of Music
Marie Antoinette (Sophia Coppola)
Paris, Je T'Aime
Madeline: Meet Me in Paris
Rugrats in Paris: The Movie
The Red Balloon
Amelie
Ratatouille

Are we missing something that is a "must see"?

lib,

Before heading off, don't miss one of the true classics of post-WWII Europe - The Third Man. It features a great cast (Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Trevor Howard), memorable zither music, all played out in (and below) the distinctive and desperate backdrop of post-war Vienna. Movies don't get much better than The Third Man.

Enjoy.

travelgourmet - I will consider watching Eurotrip to prepare for our next trip; Germany, Poland and Lithuania.

logos999 - Very clever! Perhaps should have found "A Pig in a Poke" game show to pay for our airline tickets, rental car and hotels. c'est la vie!

explorerb - I will definitely look into The Third Man. Danke!

Though I had seen it already, I watched Under the Tuscan Sun before heading to Italy.

For the south of France, watch "RONIN" starring Robert DeNiro. You'll get a kick out of it too!

Enjoy!

Since you are limiting yourself to fairly recent and very light films, I would add Woody Allen's "Everyone Says I Love You," shot in Paris and in Venice.

I prefer to see such movies AFTER the trip.

"A Year In Provence" or more recently "A Good year", "Jean De Florette" and its sequel "Manon Des Sources" all of these give you the full south of France experience.

(Sorry, hit "post" too soon). Do the trip before the movies so you get to form your own first impressions of each place. The trips will help you get more enjoyment out of the movies-- much more than the other way around.

"fairly recent", Eks, I don't think so - three out of nine must be at least 40 years old! But it's wonderful to see "The Red Balloon" in anyone's list, assuming it's the original, 50s, version (and there hasn't been a Hollywood makeover).

Libs - I confess I don't really - I prefer to read books - but of course my "places I want to go" list has been affected by the movies I've seen.

Must sees? Well, forgive me for being serious, but I'd suggest getting your hands on a copy of the documentary series "The World at War". And browsing the internet versions of European newspapers is handy too.

Cheers.

Yes you are right, Afterall! I guess I should have just said "light" film fare.

I fear, for example, that the "Red Balloon" mentioned was the recent film with Juliette Binoche..

We always try to read books and watch movies in general preparation for our trips

From the list of what you have seen so far it sounds as though you have some young children and are going to France and Austria/Switzerland?

There are many threads with recommended movies for adults
I would suggest both Before Sunrise (Vienna) and Before sunset (Paris), Avenue Montaigne (Paris), Breathless (the original)

There are lots of great BBC shows set in London and other parts of England if you are going there. I would have more specific recommendations if I knew where you will be and ages of your kids

For kids, you might want to try the DAvid Macaulay film of Cathedral and maybe Castle and Roman City. They mix some story lines with shots of actual places in Europe. Our older son particularly liked Cathedral when he was about 4 even though they are intended for older kids.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame Disney movie is not a great movie by any means but it would get your kids interested in seeing the cathedral, the gargoyles, the bell, etc
