The Global Fare says it's for certain ages (under 26 or over 60) or for round trip. Are you in those categories?

Global fares for night-time travel

The “Spar-Night” offer lets you travel through the night at lower fares. The “Spar-Night” fares comprise a ticket and reservation for a comfort category of your choice. Please note that the “Spar-Night” offer cannot be exchanged and is non-refundable. Other reductions, e.g. with the BahnCard, are not granted. Further global fare offers apply in the night trains to France, Belgium and Italy.

"Junior" tariff: for travellers under 26, non-refundable from the departure date.
"Senior" tariff: for travellers over 60, non-refundable from the departure date.
"Tourist" tariff: for adults when the outward and return journey is booked at the same time with at least one night’s stay at the destination.
The whole booking is refundable up to one day before departure of the outward journey at 50% of the travel fare. From the departure date of the outward journey the booking cannot be exchanged and is non-refundable.

"Mini" tariff: cannot be exchanged and is non-refundable. Only offered in the comfort categories seating and couchette carriages.

You have to pay a surcharge for the desired category - sleeper, couchette or seating carriage - in addition to the ticket for night trains. The fares shown here usually already include this surcharge for night trains.

I've just tried to replicate your booking at www.bahn.de

I see what i expect to see, a fare for each type of couchette and sleeper at the spar-night (saving night) rate, which is an inclusive fare for this train covering travel and sleeper or couchette, and 'spezials' where the prices shown are made up of a €29/€39/€39 'spezial' travel ticket plus the appropriate supplement for the relevant type of couchette or sleeper. And the full price, of course.

I think the system just handles these two fare types differently, as they are compiled differently. You'll notice the spezial gets a self-print option whereas the spar-night has to be sent by mail, for example.

In 10 years of running my website, I have never had anyone yet select something clearly shown as a sleeper, and end up in a seat, certainly not the the pretty good Bahn.de website, so I'm 99.99% sure you're safe to go ahead and book the €158 saving night fare for a double sleeper. But do confirm 100% after you go, just in case this arises again!

I should add that in this case, the system doesn't show car or betrh numbers before you pay, so I can't check that way.

But this should give you peace of mind immediately after you've booked, rather than having to wait to see what you get when you board the train:

Your berth numbers should have a 1 and 5 OR a 2 and 6 as the last digit, for example 41 and 45. Don't panic that you're not in the same room, you are! 1 and 2 and lower berths, 3 and 4 are middle berths (not used when the compartment is set up as a 2-berth), 5 and 6 are uppers. The first digit is the compartment, or in a sleeping-car, adjacent pair of compartments. So 11 & 15 are in the first compartment, 12 and 16 in the next, 21 and 25 in the next, 22 and 26 in the next, 31 and 35 in the next, and so on.

I just did a dummy booking, listing two people, both 30. I could have gotten the Global fare of €218 for two beds in an economy double cabin.

Why on earth you would want to travel this way is beyond me-overnight travel is so over.
Let me warn you, you won't get much sleep.A few years ago, we were part of a tour group and had to take the overnight train from Lviv to Budapest-a nightmare!

Generally speaking, the further east you go in Europe the worse the trains. A Lviv To Budapest train is not a good comparison to a Munich to Budapest Euronight train. Plus, I've slept well on a lot of night trains...

My doubt is: when I try the saving-night fare of 158 euros, at the end of the booking they sayat the Reservation Request: "Train with reservation obligation, 2 seats in the 1 class" - The problem is that I don't want 2 seats - but 2 beds. Did you notice that?

Thank you for replying. I thought of traveling at night because I would not like to travel 7hs during the day. it seems to be a waste of time. The flight tickets in this route is very expensive. It seems I dont have a better option. I have heard pros and cons about overnight travels. I just would like to experience it once. But soemtimes I am really confused about what to do...

I am trying to book a double sleeper overnight from Munich to Budapest for a 24yr old and 27yr old and I keep getting this from the bahn.com website "Train with reservation obligation, 2 seats in the 1. class"

Nothing about a sleeper in the confirmation. I'm choosing the saver option. Am I doing something wrong? Please help!

I'm not sure what you mean by selecting the saver option, but you should get a screen with choices of compartments. What is your date? Are you selecting the train that departs at 23:40? Your choices should look be similar to these and will have an x for fares sold out. These fares are for 2 travelers with the ages you listed.

Thanks for your help Kybourbon. When I choose the Sleeper 2 persons in Economy Double cabin, 158,000 EURO all works great till I get to check out. AT checkout it says Reservation Request: Train with reservation obligation, 2 seats in the 2. class.

I am booking a sleeper, not two seats.

Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for your help.
Can I not book the saver (158,000) fare?
