Edinburgh to Alnwick WITHOUT a car?

Jump to last reply

DH and I will be in Edinburgh for a week in October; he does NOT want to drive, but we want to take 2-3 day trips. We will probably take a tour group (Rabbies or Timberbush) to the Highlands for a long day and probably go to Stirling on our own via train for a short day. I have looked at dozens of possibilities of another day trip via train or group (wish we had a month!), and right now Alnwick is in the lead. Both Rabbies and Timberbush have itineraries that include Alnwick Castle, but I’m wondering how difficult it would be for us to do a trip just to Alnwick, via train (and ???) on our own? I’d sorta like to go to Borders Books! And that won’t happen with a group tour.

So has anybody traveled Edinburgh to Alnwick without a car? Is getting a taxi or bus very difficult from Alnmouth? And back to the train station? Or should we just opt for one of the tours and see some places like Kelso or Lindisarne but not get to the bookstore?
