any advice on day trips that can be done from Siena via train or bus in the Chianti southern Tuscany area? In early October.

In 3 directions, I would plan to see Montalcino, Castellina, and San Gimignano--all by bus. See www.turismoverde.com for more details.

Thanks Bob, have visited Castellina, stayed in Montalcino and San Gim before - what about Radda or Montepulciano?

I don't know if you can get there by bus, but I would highly recommend the walled town of Montepulciano for a day trip.

Direct busses are available from Siena to Montepulciano. In fact they are as quick as driving, and a whole lot cheaper (round trip for two people just over 17 euro).
