Driving from Rennes to Geneva
I'm going to drive from Rennes to Geneva and looking for help on where to stay midway.
I am staying 1 night on MSM the evening of 8/4 and have to be at the Geneva Airport by 1300 hours on 8/6. Even though gas is pricey, I would love to see the countryside, slower than 200 mph and have the opportunity to occasionally stop for a tasty treat or to walk a beautiful little village/town. On Google maps it shows 526 mi / 846 ki and about 8 hours of driving. That is a very doable distance but was wondering what would be a good halfway or 2/3 distance point to stay for the night? Any help on this topic would be very much appreciated.

According to Viamichelin.com, the quickest route passes Auxerre - which is a very interesting city & where I would stop. Pick up a walking itinerary at the TI & follow it. The path is also painted on the sidewalk - except where the sidewalk has recently been re-surfaced.
Of course, Auxerre is in Burgundy - with many castles & pretty countryside nearby.
If you have already visited Auxerre/Burgundy - I would stop in Troyes. Fantastic city.

Vezelay (***Michelin site I believe), near Auxerre, is also a really nice stop and small enough to be an easy 2-hour stop - for lunch and a walk around the old medieval town:

Vezelay - one of the most thriving pilgrimage meccas in medieval days (I think on the way to Chartres and or Santiago) but when the holy relic was exposed as a fake the town's pilgrimage trade dried up and the village on a hill slumbered along untouched by the world until rehabbed and restored in the 1800s- Vezelay an Italian hill town in France:
