Enjoyed your blog. Driving my own vehicle over those Dordogne roads might have given me a heart attack. We just kept reminding ourselves "zero deductible." Looks like one heck of a trip.

twk - we've got a good insurance package and have been assured that we'll have a "new" car delivery back in the US. Any external damage will be fixed. We're in the Pyrenees now and the roads might be a bit better. I'll update the blog tomorrow after we drive a bit. Thanks!

Thanks for this. Looks like a great trip. Interestingly, the first person I ever met in the Dordogne back in 1993 was the Hungarian man who eventually opened La Merenda. Not sure if he's still there, but he was quite a character!

There are a lot of caves with prehistoric paintings that can be visited - among them Combarelles (next door to Font-de-Gaume), the Grotte de St-Cirq (just down the road in St-Cirq), Pech Merle, and a host of others in France and Spain alone.

StCirq - how funny that you met the guy who opened Ma Lerenda! There was a woman who seemed to be running the place all three nights we ate there.

My bad on the cave stat. Our very enthusiastic guide made a distinction between prehistoric paintings, engravings, and painted outlines of animals. He said there was something unique about the paintings at Font de Gaume that couldn't be seen elsewhere. I must have gotten it wrong. Whatever the case, it was sure amazing!

I recall some pitch about some unique feature of Font du Gaume, but I don't recall exactly what it was. Whatever they claim, I really enjoyed the tour, and prehistoric cave art was not high on my list of priorities.
