Day trips around Vienna

We're going to Vienna for 6 days at the beginning of September (active 60+). As well as the usual sites, we also are planning on 2 day trips. We'll be doing the trip to Melk and Krems by train and boat. I can't decide what to do for the second trip. I discounted Bratislava because we don't want an urban trip. We also want to travel an hour or less each way.
I've read about the Vienna Woods and villages. Some other possibilities that I found are the Klosterneuburg Monastery, Grinzing and the area, Leopoldsberg and Kahlenberg. We wouldn't mind doing some short, easy trails in the Woods as well as visiting a village.
I also read that there is an event called Genussmeile that will be taking place the weekend that we're going to be there. However, every site I opened was only in German so I'm not sure what actually happens (except that it's connected to wine which is something we enjoy!)
We also want to go to a heurige. I understand that there are many in the Grinzing area.
Could anyone suggest an itinerary for a half day trip ? We'll be taking public transportation only.
Thanks.

Stiff Klosterneuburg tours are conducted at certain times throughout the day, so you would have to set your travel from Vienna accordingly. Also, you have to select from among the tour options. Reaching Klosterneuburg by train is easy from Vienna.

Among our favorite easy walks in the Vienna vineyards: take the 38A (bus) from the U4 (U-Bahn) station terminus at Heiligenstadt to either Cobenzl or Kahlenberg. From either station follow the well-marked paths downhill to either Grinzing or Nußdorf to enjoy time in a heuriger. From Grinzing catch the 38 tram to the Inner Staadt; from Nußdorf, the D tram will work.

The Genussmeile is a vineyard wander/hike through a vineyard-filled section of the Vienna Woods, where one wanders from "Buschenshank" (the German term for heuriger) to "Buschenshank," sampling wines and small plates as you go. To wander the entire path would take the better part of the day, if not all day depending on how much one stops to "sample." A smaller, but no less enjoyable experience would be to take the train from Vienna to Gumpoldskirchen and wander their Kellergasse (wine press house lane) and some of the vineyards beyond. You could very easily fill a half-day with this itinerary.

Another activity you might enjoy while in Vienna is Erntedank, the "Harvest Thanks" festival, occurring on 10-11 September in Vienna's Augarten. Every region of Austria has tents showcasing their products (for purchase and to eat); there is typically a large beer hall/tent with music and regional foods, as well. http://www.erntedank.jungbauern.at

Personally, and this is just my opinion, but September is a perfect time to be outdoors in Austria. Don your Trachten and wander the vineyards and harvest festivals. Eat great food, drink superlative wine, and breathe fresh alpine air. (In other words, I would skip the monastery unless the weather is pouring rain. )

All the places/hikes you've suggested sound great. We're looking for outdoor experiences to offset the museums that we'll be visiting.
Thanks!

Most of the trails that I found on the maps are 10-11 kilometres. From your experience, are there shorter ones (3-4 kilometres or less?) Or can we use public transportation for part of the way down?

Taltul, it sounds like you're looking at the Stadtwanderweg, the 9 or so dedicated trails. The easiest approach is to begin at Cobenzl, walk past the petting farm and onto the paths (stopping first for a pre-walk Grüner Veltliner, perhaps). Follow along Oberer Reisenbergweg into Grinzing. Where O.R. intersects with Cobenzlgasse I believe there is a bus stop (38A), but at this point you are effectively in Grinzing and will have numerous heuriger at which to pause before returning to Vienna's Inner Stadt. This route is ~5-6 km, downhill, mostly shaded, and with benches and scenic vistas along the way. If you are planning to do this walk on a weekend you will be in the company of many other walkers should you need navigational assistance.

For this route it would be helpful to have a printed map of the area handy (or one on your mobile), since this is a mishmash of different routes, and you can be inadvertently sent uphill if you follow any particular trail exclusively.

I hope this is helpful.

The views are different. From Kahlenberg you have a fabulous overlook onto Vienna and the Danube and lots of vineyards. There is a lovely viewing terrace and cafe. Cobenzl is not as high as Kahlenberg, so the views are mostly vineyards and Vienna Woods. If it's views you are after, head to Kahlenberg (make sure the 38A bus is going there; some only go as far as Cobenzl), though your walk down will be longer, and it would be easier to head into Nußdorf than to Grinzing.

Thanks. I read about the walk down to Nussdorf and also about a miniature train that you can take from Nussdorf to Kahlenberg. Looks like we have lots of options.

So starting my research on day trips / hikes from Vienna. We are going to be there in December and wondered whether the hike between wineries / tastings is possible at that time of year or is it really only an option on the scheduled weekend in September? Recognize hike will be weather dependent but if not snowing/raining it sounds like a nice afternoon hiking a bit with some wine tasting. Thanks

TJinSOMA, you might have more luck with responses if you started a new post, rather than tagging on to one that is outdated. Just a suggestion.

That said, the hiking/wandering between heuriger in Vienna is an annual event occurring in late September. The route is open for one weekend through (some) normally private vineyards, and proprietors set up temporary Buschenshank along the way for sampling. During the warmer months before the autumn harvest some of the heuriger in the vineyards will be open (usually on weekends); during December practically none are open, so one must wander down into Grinzing or the neighboring villages to find an open heuriger. Hours vary wildly during the winter holidays, so plan accordingly.

Thanks fourfortravel. Agreed on new post.....just always get tired of the "do a search" beatdown. Disappointing on the wine hike in September but that's what I figured. Sounds like a lot of fun so maybe on some other trip.
