Croatia for 9 days - solo trip
HI Guys, need your help. i am planning a trip to Croatia in the last 10 days of November. This is going to be my first solo trip so I had a few questions and it would be great if you all can pour in your replies and help me out. I am interested in all kinds of activities -no specific like or dislike
1. A rough itinerary for the 9 days of places i can visit and things I can do (can extend my trip by a day or two if needed)
2. Is November a good time to travel ? i don't mind the chilly weather but is there any activity I won't be able to do or any festival I won't be able to attend ?
3. How safe is Croatia for a woman traveller, I am 30 years old and plan to stay in hostels- should I go with hostels or chose a different kind of accommodation for myself.
4. I am an Indian Citizen in the US on work visa, what kind of visa do i need for croatia ? If I get Schengen visa will that work ?
5. If you feel Croatia is bad idea for a solo female traveller in November, what other places would you recommend for 9-10 days in Europe.

1. Rough itinerary: I can't help you there -- Croatia easily merits at least 3 weeks, so only you can decide what YOU want to see and experience!
FWIW, the Plitvice Lakes National Park is, IMO, the single most un-missable of Croatia's many splendors. Not only are the lakes connected by travertine waterfall formations, each lake has unique microbiota, and as a result, the lakes are different colors. The best way to see that is to make a single, long loop through the park -- something on the order of 6 hours or more (including time for the boat that connects the lower and upper lakes).
To decide what to include / exclude, or even what areas to give most attention, I recommend that you start by getting some good guidebooks -- always a worthy investment IMO, and especially for novice travellers, as there will be things you never even thought to question. You might want to consult a few at your local library first, just to see which suit your needs bests. For inspiration and high quality photographs, you might want to start with Eyewitness or Insight or National Geographic Traveller. Then check Fodor's or Frommer's or the Michelin Green Guide for prioritizing your options. And then check the Rough Guide or Lonely Planet to get nitty gritty details. Then confirm all details on official on-line websites.
As you review these guidebooks, identify the things you most want to see in each location, note their opening/closing times, and mark them on a calendar. Then pencil in your transportation, add some time on either side (for getting to/from your lodging, checking in/out, packing/unpacking, getting oriented, etc.). Then see how things fit together.
2. November: Some things in primarily tourist-oriented areas will likely be closed. Again, you need to consult some good guidebooks.
3. I (solo female traveller) spent a month in the area, solo, in May 2009 -- I found it easy and comfortable -- no worries about safety -- just take the usual precautions!
4. Sorry -- can't help you on this one.
5. I don't think Croatia is an ideal location for November -- JMO, and only you can make that call. But it's hard to recommend anything else without knowing your interests.
That said, you might want to look at Andalusia: 9 days would give you a great chance to see the best of this magnificent area, which is, or at least is generally, a good place to see in November. You could spend, say, 3 days in Sevilla, 2 or 3 in Granada, a day or 2 in Cordoba, a day in Ronda, maybe a day in Malaga.... You'd have to fit your itinerary around your time frame and interests, but it should be do-able. Just an idea!

i agree with everything what Kja wrote.... about visa all i can do is to contact US ambassy in Zagreb (Croatia) on e-mail [email protected] to get some more informations.
About saftey in Croatia you dont need to be worried about that but i would suggest, in case u decide to come here than DON'T take a trip which include Slavonija ( eastern part of Croatia) cause there are a loooot of muslim immigrants right now and i guess you dont want that kind of vacation (no offense).
I would definitely suggest Dalmacija (sea coast).

Re: southern Spain -- in addition to the ideas I already offered, (a) get a GOOD guidebook or two, perhaps the Rough Guide and/or the Michelin Green Guide; (b) decide what most interests you, and then (c) come back and post a new thread, tagged for Spain, with your proposed itinerary and questions.
