Croatia Coastal Ferry to Rijeka
I am looking to go to Rovinj in early June. I will be in either Hvar or Split. Is the coastal ferry to Rijeka (then rental car Rijeka to Rovinj) the best way to go? I realize the coastal ferry schedule does not operate until June 1. In the past how often did the route I describe above operate per week. If anyone has any taken this route I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Uh, let me correct that. Last year the ferry from Stari Grad/Split to Rijeka traveled on Thursdays and Saturdays. Alternately you can pick up a rental car in Split and drive up the coast and over to Rovinj. There are some nice places to visit along the coast north of Split, like Sibenik and Zadar.
We picked up a rental car at the dock in Split, drove to Plitvice for a couple nights, then drove from Plitvice to Rovinj in an afternoon, with a long, inadvertent detour through Rijeka.

Thanks Mimar and neckervd. I had no idea, if I am reading the ferry schedule correctly, that it takes approx. 12 hours from Split to Rijeka. Trapped on a bus would seem intolerable so it looks like a car rental in Split and a drive up the coast is my best option.

The overnight ferry from Hvar via Split to Rijeka takes about 12 hrs, indeed. If the datas match, it is the best way for people who don't want to waste their time with transport. You can just board the ferry in the evening, sleep in a comfortable cabin and leave it at Rijeka the next morning.
The bus ride from Split to Rijeka takes about 8 hrs, as you certianly saw in the timetable I sent you with my previous post.
By car you can do it in 6 hrs (without any intermediate stop).

neckervd,
What are the cabins like from Split to Rijeka. Are private cabins for 2 available? Ensuite? Can you give a range of what it might cost and what the best way to book this is if we choose to. Thanks again.

Neither the timetable nor the fares have been published until now. As soon as it will be clear that the ferry will run this summer, it can be booked with any agency, like aferry.com, directferries.com, ocean24.com or others
2 berth cabins with ensuite shower/toilet are usually available (outside and inside).

neckervd,
Thanks so much for your help I believe we have decided to take the overnight ferry from Split to Rijeka, hopefully get a good nights sleep, and be ready to roll upon arrival. Your info. greatly assisted us in making the decision.

If there are 2 of us the 2 berth cabin will obviously be private. I assume the 3/4 berth cabins are 3 or 4 bunk beds. If there are only 2 of us could we possibly be sharing the cabin with 1 or 2 others? The reason I ask is the 3/4 berth inside cabin w/wash basin is much cheaper per person than the 2 berth inside cabin w/wash basin. Thanks.
