Could someone recommend GOOD language tapes?
I'm traveling to Spain next Spring and would like to learn a little Spanish before I go. Unfortunately, I don't have time to take a course so I'm going to try the audio tape/CD method. I don't want a strictly "conversation" or "travelers" version, but rather a course that teaches grammar, etc. I've studied other languages so I'm familiar with HOW to learn a language, I just need some guidance as to a good program. I looked at the Foreign Service Institute program but thought their book was awful. Can anyone offer advice?

Peter, <BR>Language/30 tapes are published by the Educational Services Corp., 1725 K St. NW Washington D C 20006. <BR>They're based on accelerated language learning methods used for government personnel scheduled for overseas assignments. Found the Dutch tapes to be beneficial to me.

Everyone will have his or her opinion in answer to your question. I learned German with Berlitz and use it continuously in my volunteer work with tourists. What I lack in vocabulary and/or grammar is made up in my willingness to try. Just don't be shy about speaking another language -- they love to hear you try. Native-speaking Germans tell me my pronunciation is quite good, something few Americans have, they say. Since I speak fluent Spanish (and learned it as a child), I sympathize with your goal. <BR>Spanish is a language that reads more easily than it is spoken. Very idiomatic, depending on where you come from and the circumstances. Try the Berlitz tapes and workbooks. Nothing, however, beats total immersion, going someplace where you MUST use the language. One thing I do know: you will receive a lot of laughs and smiles when you try!

I benefitted the most from Pimsleur's tape series - no written material with these, but I listen to them in the car over and over and they were the most clear and comprehensive. It was important for me to see how things were spelled also, so I used other series with books when I had time at home to read and listen. What I've done is try different sets of tapes from the library - that way you get a broad spectrum of teaching styles and can find out what is best for you.
