Copenhagen hotel for family??

Hello! We are a family of four (kids are pre/early teens) seeking accomodations in Copenhagen. We'll be taking a Baltic cruise in June and hope to spend a few days afterward in Copenhagen. However, I've been disappointed thus far in researching lodging options for us. I have been surprised to find how expensive accomodations are in Copenhagen and how, apparently, small they are given the prices! I'd love to hear any suggestions other family travelers might have. Any places you've really liked with decent rooms for families?? We're planning to drive from Germany, so we can be flexible on location, but we'd ideally like something in the heart of things that also has parking available! Thanks, in advance, for your help.

You might try the CabInn. I think there's one in Copenhagen. We stayed in one in Arhus when we were horrified with the hostel in which we had made reservations. The room in the CabInn was teensy, and the twin beds were pushed together so that my sister had to get in her bed by crawling in from the bottom. It had everything we needed, and we loved it. It was clean and efficient. Just great!

When we were in Copenhagen, we stayed in a hostel, the DanHostel, which we really liked. Normally we wouldn't stay in a hostel, preferring an elegant boutique hotel, but Denmark was so expensive that we decided to bite the bullet. The DanHostel is 13 stories, with the majority of guests being young people, but they were from all over the world, including Iceland or Greenland. I think your kids would enjoy meeting all those young people.

It really has everything you need, including an inexpensive cafeteria. There was a kitchen where you could cook and eat, and a laundromat. Also computers were available in the lobby. I think you could even rent bicycles.

The hostel gives you your pillow, comforter and duvet cover, and you make your own bed, which unfolds from the wall. There's a sort of little desk with a chair so that those who cannot live without their laptop can pound away. That's pretty much it, except for the bathroom.

The price was $108 per day, which was a great bargain. It's probably gone up a bit now, but I have no doubt that it's still a great deal.

If you provide an idea of budget it might help.

And have you used the standard search engines to find out which hotels offer family rooms?

we booked on Hotwire and stayed at Crowne Plaza - copenhagen. While a bit far from the center, it was an easy commute on Metro link. the price was below $100 with taxes and fees included. The rooms were very spacious and we joined the Crowne Plaza Priority Club to get access to the VIP lounge where the hotel provided free breakfast and happy hour with snacks starting at 4:00 pm.

bee2travel:

we are partial to a fine property...Ibsen's..near Noordport, walking distance to most of the sites, located in a residential neighborhood. Excellent in-house restaurant, fine breakfasts, large rooms, a spotless and friendly environment. One of the few hotels anywhere that is owned and operated by women....and it shows.

Tower: Did you mean, "Norreport?" I can't type the slash through the first "O" on my computer. I think I know the hotel that you've mentioned. I'm going to bookmark it. I used to live in Copenhagen. Happy Travels!

Hi Guen..how ya doing these days? Of coursed we're all praying for better days for Andy!

Yes, of course, Nørreport, with all the rental bikes out front. As a woman of taste, you would particularly like Ibsens.

I have always liked The Square hotel for its location on Radhuspladsen, its clean design and its affordable rates and despite its too soft mattresses.

Wow, what a terrific surprise to find so many helpful responses so FAST! Thanks a bunch for the great feedback:

Nytraveler: I didn't include a budget beecause we're usually pretty flexible when traveling. We don't need luxury, but we do appreciate quality. We don't mind spending a bit more (or less) for a really good value. Copenhagen seems really challenging in that rates for places like the Marriott looked to be around $350 per night while even places that have gotten very mixed reviews seem to be $200. I guess I didn't think Copenhagen would be more pricey than Paris! I'd love to find something under $200 per night that sleeps all 4 of us in one room and offers a good breakfast. Some of the hotels that mention 'family' rooms are less than clear about the sleeping arrangements, so we'd want to be sure that there'd be room for 4, not just a jr suite that really only accomodates 3. I expect I'll need to make phone calls to clarify and confirm details, but I'm hoping to be more focused when doing that!

Pegontheroad: I hadn't really considered a hostel, but maybe I should! I did budget travel as a college kid MANY years ago but as a family we've not tried that avenue. Thanks for the details on the Danhostel; I'll take a look. And thanks for the info on the CabInn, too. There is one in CPH so I'll look. Plus, we may journey to Arhus so that might be a good option there, too. BTW, where was it in Arhus that you had a bad experience...ie what should we avoid?!

RainyDay09: The Crowne Plaza deal sounds terrific; I'll definitely look into that. I've never used Hotwire but want to check it out! My family appreciates comfort and cozy if it's not outrageously priced. At the price you mention it sounds like quite a deal! We'll have a car so a location outside the main hub would be fine since I hear the metro in CPH is great. That might be a good compromise for better quality accomodations so I'm eager to check it out.

Tower: I don't recall seeing Ibsen's when looking around initially but it sounds great, too. We'd be happy to stay in a residential area since it often gives a different perspective on a city. Thanks for the link!

All....thanks again for the amazing feedback. I've got some research to do and am delighted to have solid directions in which to look. One of the kids has a big bday event today, so I won't get to it until later, unfortunately. I'll let you know what I find and if I have follow up questions.

Tower:Thanks for the info on how to do the Danish slash on the computer. I'll try it out. I have a Mac.

As for the Hotel Ibsen, well, I've finally found a hotel for the future! I have only stayed in a hotel once in Copenhagen, summer 2009, as for a three- and- a- half decade period, I either had my own, rented place for 11 weeks straight, or stayed with friends on shorter stays. But, in 2009, I just needed to zip over to take care of some personal banking business, so I stayed at a hotel, for the first time.

The hotel that I chose was The Square, as it was both a short walk to my bank and I could also walk to a friend's place, across the water from the Ibsen Hotel. Well, The Square wasn't one that I would personally return to. My room was claustrophobically small, the shower overflowed onto the bathroom floor, I was sleeping in a twin bed, that would be something that pre-teens would sleep in here, and although I asked for a non-smoking room, my room was filled with smoke from wherever it was coming from. And I didn't have a cell phone, but needed to call a few friends, who lived walking distance from the hotel, and one who lived a bit out of central Copenhagen, and my phone bill came to right under $100. I know DK is expensive, but that's ridiculous.

Whenever, I get back, I'm moving to the Hotel Ibsen! Plus, it's a lovely stroll along the water in that area. Happy Travels!

First off, the parking is going to increase your expense. Even street parking will be expensive in the city. The obvious 'out of town' options in Ørestad even seem to charge DKK 150 per day, which is a bit under US$30.

As for the hotel... Are you looking for one room for 4 people? If so, then I would look at the Wakeup Hotel, which offers a family room (really 2 connecting rooms), or a 2 bedroom apartment at the Adina.

http://www.wakeupcopenhagen.com/the-hotel/hotel-rooms/
http://www.adina.eu/adina-apartment-...openhagen/home

Both are just outside the city center (on opposite sides), which means a bit of a walk to the center (or a bus or a walk to the train), but not terrible. And parking should be a fair bit cheaper and easier to find. The Adina will come with a kitchen and laundry facilities if that matters. It is also very near the Little Mermaid and the cruise port. Downside is that the area is a bit quiet at night and doesn't offer many restaurants at your doorstep. The Wakeup is near Tivoli and the main train station. It is also closer to Vesterbro, which offers some more affordable restaurants, particularly ethnic restaurants (word of warning, Chinese food in Copenhagen is dire and should generally be avoided).

The Crowne Plaza mentioned above would work too, but it requires a metro ride to get anywhere in town - it is at the very end of the metro. Not the end of the world, though, and I have heard good things about the hotel itself. If you got a good deal, go for it. Otherwise, I would prefer the Adina, followed by the Wakeup. The Tivoli Hotel next to the Wakeup would also be an option, though pricier.

Other than those, Expedia doesn't turn up a lot of rooms that will hold 4 people.

If you are okay with 2 rooms, then your options expand. For location, I really like the Scandic Front, The Skt Petri, and the Admiral, along with a few others in that general vicinity (check out the Arp-Hansen group website). The Square and the Scandic Palace are good for Tivoli, but I don't like that area as much as the Nyhavn area where the others are. Parking will be steep for any of these, if available at all. For room quality and good service, I like the Marriott, but it is near the Wakeup, so a bit outside the heart of things, but they also have parking, which some of the above may not.

http://www.arp-hansen.com/ - A local chain. Some of the older hotels are, well, older, but they are pretty decent, and they have some good locations.

Honestly, all taken together, I would probably stick with either the Adina or the Wakeup.

I guess I didn't think Copenhagen would be more pricey than Paris!

Copenhagen is among the most expensive cities in the world. Bring your pocketbook. With the exception of Oslo and Zurich, I have not found many cities that approach the prices of Copenhagen. Discounting hotels, even Tokyo is more affordable, IMO.

And thanks for the info on the CabInn, too. There is one in CPH so I'll look.

Personally, I don't find the CabInns to be overly compelling. The savings simply don't seem overwhelming enough to justify the compromises.

places like the Marriott looked to be around $350 per night

If you are a risk-taker, you can try Priceline. The Marriott seems to be the main (only???) 4-star hotel that people win, with winning bids looking to be in the $100 to $130 range. It is a very, very nice hotel. A bit corporate, but the rooms are a good size and nicely appointed. If you need help with Priceline, plenty of folks here can help you.

I don't have any experience with renting apartments in Copenhagen, just thought I'd share a link. I didn't rent from this company, but I researched apartments for my trip and these seemed nice:
