Consider Slovenia!

If you're thinking about traveling and looking for something a bit off the beaten track, consider Slovenia! We wrote about our visit in the Slovenia travelogue that's posted on our web site. Enjoy! Don&Linda
http://thetravelzine.com

Don & Linda: I skimmed your travelogue. Very interesting. I visited friends in Slovenia in 94. You're right. It is a very beautiful country. I felt that it was a lot like Austria. I went to Bled (BEAUTIFUL), Ljubljana, Postojna caves, Portoroz (the seaside), and Logarska Valley (I think that's what it was called). My friends live in Velenje, a town near Celje, about 1 1/2 hours from Ljubljana. I found Slovenia to be a little like NJ. The climate is similiar, it has lakes, mountains, farms, and the seaside just like we do. If anyone who reads this is shocked to hear that comparison, you must not know too much about NJ (except maybe Newark airport). Definitely a great destination off the beaten path.

How interesting! I was wondering how you would compare the cost of travel in Slovenia with that within Austria. We have always found Vienna to be among the most expensive cities in Europe and would welcome some information about a less-expensive place to go that is not crawling with Germans.

We visited Slovenia last November and especially enjoyed our stop at the Lipica Horse Farm. We saw the beautiful Lippizanner stallions and toured the grounds. It's only minutes from Triestre, Italy!

Hi -
We are going to be in Austria next summer and thought it might be interesting to check out Slovenia for a few days. Anyone been there? Any recommendations?
I was going to start a new thread, but I found this one in the archive and decided to bring it back to the top.

- Bill

Definitely go! Slovenia's a great place (and quite a bit cheaper than Austria), the people are friendly and a lot speak English. Ljubljana's a beautiful small city - with a castle, river, art galleries, pavement cafes, etc - very relaxing, and in the summer they have free outdoor concerts. Other places I'd recommend are Piran (on the coast) - a picturesque historic fishing village, and Bled and Bohinj lakes.
