Cash in Venice

Have not been to Venice in a long time . . . but I seem to remember that you need cash - Euros- more than credit cards. What is the best way to get a wad of cash for Venice? I don't think I want to take it on the plane, but then exchange rates are probably not so good in Venice. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Well- the last time I was in Venice - two years ago - almost everyone took CCs - including little local restaurants.

But if you want to operate with cash you simply pull if from your checking account at an ATM.

Hi devanson, exchange rates are no different in Venice or any of Italy or any European country that uses the euro.

Use a ATM card that is connected to your checking account at your bank at home (assume you live in the US). ATM's will not allow you to withdraw money from a savings account. Have a 4 digit pin. Advise your bank (where you have your ATM card) the dates you will be in Europe.

Many people have two checking accounts with a different a ATM card for each account as a back up in case something happens to one of their ATM cards. Suggestion is to use the ATM at a bank, especially during open banking hours, in case your ATM card is not returned etc.

Venice, credit cards can be used in most places but some places want cash. Check with your credit card co. as to what percent they will add on for using the credit card in Italy. Notify them also the dates that you will be in Italy.

Some people like to have 100 euro plus to take with them to Italy so they do not have to find an ATM when they first arrive. I am one of those travellers. I get the euro through my local bank.

Also, I believe for any charges under something like 20 euro merchants in Italy do not have to accept a credit card (unlike in the US) but can demand cash (euro).

I sure hope this answers most of your questions. My wishes for a beautiful time in Italy.

Some recent travelers have also stated that restaurants were charging them in US Dollars rather than Euros if they paid with their credit card. Another reason that it might be a good idea to use mostly cash if possible.

I agree that ATM's are the best way to go. We had no problem finding them in Venice on our last trip and plan to use ATM's again this fall.

Same as most other destinations... use an ATM card with a 4 digit pin which is tied to your home checking account.

I had no problem finding ATM machines in Venice.
