Car Travel in France: Loire Valley to Strasbourg
My wife and I are travelling from the Loire Valley (Amboise/Tours) to Strasbourg in early July and were thinking of taking (1) the train or (2) driving, since we will already have a car in the Loire. We need to get to Strasbourg in 1 day.
Should we take the train and rent another car in Strasbourg (we are touring the area in Eastern France), or just drive from the Loire Valley to Strasbourg? Is this too far (we are in our forties and don't mind car travel, but would rather not spend an entire day in a car either).
Our itinerary is set so that part isn't flexible.
Any advice here would be great!

This is what maps are for. If you don't have a paper one, there are countless ones on line - www.mappy.com or google maps, or Michelin, for example. Only you can decide if you want to travel that far in a day or not. You say your itinerary is set, so you don't have many choices. Personally, I'd rather drive than drop off a rental car, take a train, and pick up another rental car, but 700 kms is about twice as far as I like to drive in a day.
It's a 5.5-hour train ride and will cost you about 70 euros if you get a PREM fare. Renting a second car will also cost you extra. I guess I'd drive, but yes, you'll spend all day in the car. Traversing France west to east isn't a picnic.

As StCirq said, I too would rather drive. Most of the way is on major motorways and you could find an interesting 'lunch stop', at the half way point. A bit over a six hour drive. You will encounter a number of 'toll' booths. Richard www.viamichelin.com
