Car Rental and Train HELP!
We will be renting a car and driving in Tuscany before going to the Island of Elba. I am trying to figure out whether it is best to return the car in Pisa, or Piombino (and if Piombino what car rental has offices there). I am having trouble finding train route maps to look at. Is it easy to get from Pisa to Piombino by train? Also, when we leave Elba, we will need to get to Rome by train to catch our flight. How much time should we allow? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

EM - Yellow Pages lists AVIS and EUROPCAR as having bases in Piombino.
You can find train info on:
www.trenitalia.com
Journey time from Piombino to Rome is 3hrs 30' - 4 hrs.
Normally you will have to take the shuttle bus from Piombino to Campiglia Marittima station.
Trains on this route from Campiglia M. to Rome are Regionali, not Intercity or ES ...
Hope this helps ...

Thank you Steve! I had looked at Trenitalia's site, and couldnt find a route map, but i did finally find one on RailEurope. I will check out Europcar - I had already checked Avis and they have nothing available. What is the difference between Regionale and Intercity or ES? Will a Trenitalia Saver Pass still work for those? Thank You!

Hi E,
An R train is a milk train.
IC is limited stops. ES* is the fastest.
Before you buy a railpass, enter your itinerary at www.railsaver.com and click 'only if it saves money".
If you decide to buy one, it will be good for hop on/off on all but ES* trains, where you will have to buy a seat reservation.

Gaetano - Journey time to Piombino is usually 3 to 3.5 hrs - with a change at Campiglia Marittima. The last leg to Piombino is sometimes by bus.
For timetables and fares see:
www.trenitalia.com
I don't think it would be a viable day-trip from Rome - you'd need to spend at least one night there.
Hope this helps ...
