Capri/Amalfi Coast

My wife and I and another couple that we are traveling with will be in for 3 nights. One of the days we were considering taking the ferry or hydro to Naples or Sorrento so that we could view that city and then drive down the Amalfi Coast. We hear that Amalfi is a must see.

What is the best way to do this trip? What is the cost of the trasportation needed to get to Naples or Sorrento? Should we go to Naples or Sorrento? What kind of transportation should we arrange to drive down the Amalfi coast? Is this trip even worth it or should we stay in Capri for the entire stay?

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I was just there and the views are amazing. I didn't go to Capri, but instead chose to go from Sorrento to Amalfi. I was with an organised tour but we couldn't even get into Amalfi. There was a very long tour of buses to get into the town and we couldn't wait. I was disappointed but the views were stunning. Be aware when you are there that the siesta is very much alive and well. Most shops close from +/- 13:00 to 17:00!

Laura

Hi Jim -

Definitely worth it. Can't remember how much the hydrofoil costs, but it's not expensive. Hydrofoil to Sorrento. Taxi from harbor to train station - pick up bus in front of train station. Bus from Sorrento to Amalfi - sit on the right side of the bus. The most beautiful stretch of road in the world, but you'll miss most of it if you're driving because it's so challenging. I think there's a boat from Amalfi to Capri, but if there isn't, just reverse order. Be sure to go up to the Cappuccini Convento for lunch on the terrace - amazing view.

Thanks for the advice.

Does anyone know about the hydro/ferry or bus schedule and cost? Or where I can get info on this before our trip? Can you just show up or do you need to have a seat reserved?

I have been reading about the Hotel Cappucini restuarnt in Amalfi. Has anyone eaten there? Are reservations needed for lunch on the terrace?

Been to Capri a few times and time is never enough, but if you wish a sidetrip take the hydrofoil to Sorrento, rent a car,bus or taxi to Ravello.Magnificent town overlooking the sea. Gives you the opportunity to go down the Amalfi coast.Splurge and have lunch at the Hotel Palumbo Memorable day.
Good afternoon, Jim
Here is an alternate suggestion and that
is taking the local bus service to any
Amalfi town, then to the next as the
system runs from Salerno to Sorrento
Check into www.uniplan.it/sita.
A lot of Amalfi is on www.starnet.italy/amalficoast.
Capri on www.caprionline.it
Sorrento on touristicsite.syrene.it/
Have a good trip. Richard of La Grange
Park, IL.PS rail runs from Sorrent to
Naples see www.vesuviana.it/ rjv

Hi Jim, just a suggestion, but if you want to check out Capri and Amalfi coast without the rush, then I suggest you take the hydrofoil to Capri, relax and enjoy. Check out the whole island and the Grottos at leisure. Then the next day take a local bus from Sorrento along the Amalfi Coast but only as far as Postiano. This is about 1/2 way but the views are spectacular. We actually rushed and caught a bus to Postiano late one afternoon and were amazed at the scenery, so the next day took the bus again, this time all the way to Amalfi as we didnt want to miss even more spectacular scenes. Needless to say it was a bit of an anti climax "doing it twice" and the scenery in the first half was only repeated in the second, very similar but breathtaking nevertherless. As I've read the advice given by all the truly experienced travellers of this site, it seems to me that advice of "less is best" is so often the case with travel. And in the case of the Almalfi Coast road my only advice would be - don't drive, but if you do make sure you have medical insurance to cover heart attacks! ha! ha! enjoy - it's truly beautiful - Gayle
