Brugge is a wonderful place to visit and definitely worth a day trip from Brussels. It was not dark at all; it is a midlevel village but was colorful and very charming. I was there during the spring and there were a lot of flowers, which made it very colorful. January may not be quite as bright but I wouldn't think it would be depressing. I certainly recommend taking the time to see it.

Kent

we spent a day in brugge in April and it was wonderful! The boat ride might be cold in January, but it was great in the spring, but the buildings are spectacular no matter how you view them. We loved going into the lace, tapestry, and chocolate shops. All were superior and inexpensive. We bought some lovely gifts there and met many very warm ( and English speaking) shop owners and clerks. Go- it is an experience.

I was in Brugges on an overcast day, and even then it didn't seem depressing. I found it's medivel (sp) core to be charming, and wandering the streets was relaxing. I was there in the fall, so the colorful leaves really added to the whole package. Definately recommend going there.

Brugge is great! A wonderful place I'd go back to in a second any day any time of the year! Spent a marvelous 10 days there last year. Much prefer it to Brussels (where we spent 5 nights in 1996). Spend as much time as your trip allows in Brugge and walk those magical streets.......at night much is lit up and looks great too which is nice for night photography.
