Biggest disappointments in Europe

Mine have been Nimes, France, Utrecht, Holland, and Geneva, Switzerland. They weren't "bad" to visit, just not good.

Unlike Matt, I loved Nimes. It was a nice small city with the best Roman ruins, interesting shops, lovely park, pleasant atmosphere, few tourists, and a nightlife.
I was kind of disappointed by the big Villa Borghese Park in Rome, which I had imagined as a peaceful respite from the hectic Roman traffic, but it was trashed when I was there.

Matt
My biggest disappointment in Europe was Amsterdam. As I have posted before, we stayed three hours, hopped a train and left. We expected beauty, tulips and windmills and saw porn, drug cafe's and red light districts. We had not done enough research so I blame no one but myself.

i respect everyone's opinion and i'm sure some will disagree with mine, but, in defense of amsterdam, i was there with my kids and we didn't see porn, drugs, rld, etc. there's one area with much of that which we marked on our map and avoided. we did see van gogh art, anne frank's house, flower market, etc.

Mike - you're not alone about Rome. At night it was beautiful but during the day I found it very congested, relentless activity and over run with tourists ( and I live in NYC ). The food overall was very good. Trastevere (sp?) was picturesque. But Rome overall didn't enthrall me ( and I studied archtiecture ) - I looking forward to exploring the countryside and the lake district.

My biggest disappointments have always been the way Americans (not all but some) act while in Europe. Loud, obnoxious, rude behavior disappoints me!

There's always one in the group who HAS TO point out how disappointed they were with the behaviour of Americans.

I too have been disgusted at times with the behaviour of SOME Americans, but I have seen just as much bad behaviour (rudeness, loudness, vulgarity, sloppiness and so on) from many different Europeans.
The fact is, people are people.
There are badly mannered from EACH country.

I'm with "c"; so far, nothing in Europe has disappointed me. Well, OK...maybe one thing. I keep hoping to run into Tina Turner in Nice but she keeps disappointing me. :~)

I wonder if we're often disappointed by places because we have such high expectations in the first place. When I finally made it to Rome last year, for example, I'd heard so many negative things about it that my expectations were actually very low, and I really thought I might not like it. But, once I got there, I thought it was wonderful. On the other hand, if I had gone with great expectations, might I have been disappointed?

Thanks for your comment about Nimes, Dina. Almost made it there a few years ago, and it's on my list for a return trip to that area. The Villa Borghese Park "trashed"? How so? We were there on a Sunday afternoon, and thought it was quite lovely.

Sinead, point well taken! I guess I tend to finger the Americans since I am one and I notice them more. But you are absolutely correct:
People are people!
