Best way to travel Strasbourg to Dijon then on to Geneva?

We will be in Germany and France in December and are planning to drive parts of Germany but owing to the cost of leaving a rental in France we need to decide what transport to use in France. We will probably leave the car in Germany as close to Strasbourg as possible then we would like a few days in Strasbourg then to travel on to Dijon for another few days after which we are meeting our kids in Geneva for a week in Morzine.
Is it best to hire another car in France, take trains or buses?? Any suggestions or knowledge of the areas transport would be wonderful!
If booking trains or buses where to book would also be great.
Thanks for your help.

Google 'DB Timetable', and you will get the English version of the German Railway website. Enter 'Strasbourg' as the departure point, and 'Dijon Ville' as the destination. You will then see that Regional Expresses (i.e. local trains) leave Strasbourg about every two hours for Dijon, via Mulhouse and Besancon, and the trip takes about 4+ hours. There is no need to reserve tickets for these trains (indeed it may not be possible to do so!), and the Normal Price is about €40 per person in Second Class.

Further, a similar process will reveal that regional trains run about hourly between Dijon and Geneve, and once again the price of a second class ticket is about €40 per person.

Welcome to Dijon Rosie,
I hope you'll enjoy your stay. I wonder if we'll have some snow this year... If you have any questions about Dijon, feel free to ask me.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound flip in my first reply.

It's just you can get between pretty much any European cities using the trains. I've never bought tickets in advance, only once I was in Europe on the day of, or a couple days before, using them.

I've spent time in Geneva and knew getting to Dijon should be very easy.

Hi R,

Are you flying home from Geneva?

If so, you can drop the car in Offenburg, and take the train to Strasbourg - 0:30 hr, 8.6E.

There is train service between Strasbourg and Dijon via Besancon - 5 hr, 30E.

Also Dijon to Geneva.

See www.voyages-sncf.com.

Enjoy your visit.
