Best way to get from the airport in Amsterdam to the city
We will be staying for a few days in the hotel Terdam and trying to figure out the best way to get to our hotel. We will have two duffle bags, two small check-in and one camera bag as we are on the way to Tanzania. What is your experience with transportation to/from your hotel? And what would you recommend? If a taxi how much should we expect to pay? Thank you to all who takes time to help me.

Take the train. You get it right inside the airport. At Centraal Station in the city, you can get a cab medium-expensive) or use the tram -- they all start at the station. E-mail your hotel about the tram number and stop, and get a map ahead of time.

Trams are very easy and convenient, but you may want to opt for taxi if it's rush-hour and you have luggage.

I live in The Netherlands and I would take the train. It's very easy. The train station is right under the airport and there are big ticket counters visible to buy your ticket. YOur ticket will cost about 5 guilders/each way. Trains run often and your trip will only take about 15 minutes. Your stop is Centraal Station. Once at the station, you can catch a taxi to the hotel or follow Bill's advise and find out what tram to take. If you ride the tram, you will have to purchase a ticket at the train station (from the train ticket counters) and make sure you have it stamped when you board the tram. I usually buy the strippen kaart, and my partner and I can both use the strip until we have exhausted it. Have a good time.

Margarita,

Does Centraal Station in Amsterdam have a Treintaxi service? I've used the Treintaxi in Haarlem and Den Haag and have seen the service in other cities. For 6 guilders you get service to your door from the train station.

However, with two duffel bags and other luggage Tom-Tom and friend would probably be better off taking a taxi from the airport; his hotel should be able to advise him of the estimated cost, and if there is an extra cost for the duffels.

John Bermont
www.enjoy-europe.com
Hi Tom-Tom:
I recently was in Amsterdam. I took a taxi both to and from the airport. The train is convenient...true, but with luggage etc, having to go from train to tram can be very nerve racking. The cabs are spacious. You step out of the terminal at the airport go to the taxi queque and a dispatcher gets the cab and gets you on your way. It is more expensive, but worth it. Have a great trip!

Schipol has access to the train right in the basement of teh airport. I have also taken a bus. Either way is just fine, but i would suggest the train as the first option. If you take a taxi, then you really miss the point of leaving america. Only americans take taxi cabs everywhere when they travel.

in the middle between the train and taxi options is the KLM shuttle. It runs 3 times/hour during the day and costs 17.50 NLG. It makes stops at the major hotels some of which are very near the Terdam. http://dest.travelocity.com/DestGuid...C10849,00.html has a good description of all 3 methods from Schiphol.
