Ptoes, I'll curry some favor with you by mounting a bit of research. And will be back. It is a huge issue - London has the best places in the world. I say that at the risk of creating a riata on this board. Later.

The Bombay Brasserie, near Gloucester Rd., is excellent!

Found my notes: tops is Zaika, in Kensington, on Kensington High Street.
Superb, and popular, so you must reserve. I didn't check but they probably have a website. I also recall they're listed by Zagats, although I think I found my way there with a friend who lives nearby. She has spoken highly of it, and I had to agree. Enjoy.

Check out the international board at chowhound.com---there are lots of articulate and knowledgeable recommendations for Indian restaurants in London there. You can do a search on the home page. My experience has been that this is a quite reliable source of great restaurant tips for London and many other cities abroad.

For authentic South Indian vegetarian food, try Drummond St near Euston Station. I enjoyed an excellent (and cheap) meal at Diwana Bhel Poori at No 121. They have lunchtime buffet too.

Forget all above places. The best Indian resaurant I've ever been to in the world is Mela on Shaftsbury Road. It's by the Picadilly Circus stop.

Ptoes - Where are you staying in London? This will have some bearing on where you go especially if you are only here for one night but here are some ideasBR>
Bengal Clipper near Tower Bridge (think this is the one FrKiss is talking about)
website www.bengalrestaurants.co.uk

Veeraswamy - London's oldest Indian restaurant on Regent Street www.veeraswamy.com

The above two restaurants are not cheap though (you would pay GBP40 plus per head which is very expensive for Indian food)

And, Ptoes, with those fab dishes perhaps you'll enjoy a French 75 - your restaurant can make it: 1 1/2 oz. gin in a tall glass, a spalsh of Cointreau, juice of a lemon, shaved ice, and finally, fill it to the top with a decent champagne. If you're feeling truly adventurous after trying the chillies, you may even add a twist. Enjoy!!!!!!!

Ptoes---
I've eaten at several Indian restaurants in London, and I like Veeraswamy on Regent Street for its food, the diversity of selections, and its excellent service. Another poster has given you the web address. Enjoy your trip.

Ptoes,

I'm a vegetarian in London and our favorite is VAMA on King's Road in Chelsea. Bombay Brasserie is not as good as it once was and both it and Zaika are pricier than Vama, which is a really nice place (def. upscale and not your local curry house!) and has a great menu. That being said, I have friends who really like Zaika and it is quite trendy. Vama would require a reservation as well.

Russell Square Tube stop, turn left ½ block to the Russell Hotel on Southampton Row (main drag), turn left again, walk about two blocks, on your left is the Chambeli. Tandoori is excellent and, if you can stand the heat, I highly suggest the lamb vindaloo but it IS definitely not for the faint at heart. Very clean, upscale, good service, very complete menu. Medium price, I’ve never needed a reservation but then I dine fairly early. It has been said that the best Indian restaurants in the world are in London.
