take a quick day trip to many places such as San Gimignano, Sienna, Lucca, or Pisa. If you are considering such a day trip, look into http://www.fs-on-line.com because it lists the train schedules you'll need

We will have a car - I will be driving from Nice and I think stopping at either Pisa or Lucca on the Way (which one is better?) then spending 3 nights on the outskirts of florence, one full day will be spend in Florence, on the last day we want to spend in the country(hence my question - where to go with one day and a car?) .

We really liked Lucca and just wished that we had had more time there. It isn't very touristy (or wasn't last month). There's some good info about it on this board. As for places closer to Florence, we liked Siena and San Gim., but they were pretty touristy - especially San Gim. The bartender at our hotel in Florence suggested that we drive to Siena via the Chianti Giana (sp??), the "Chianti Way", which is an absolutely lovely drive past vineyards, wineries, and olive groves. We drove it on a Sunday afternoon, and it was delightful. So many neat things, so little time. Have fun!

If you only have one day to explore Tuscany head south towards Sienna. Driving though the Chianti region stopping at towns around Greve. Wandering aimlessly though the countryside, enjoying the people, wine , food, olive oil, etc. Find out were market days are in different villages and GO! You don't have to go to the most popular tourist spots to enjoy that area.
