Beaches in Spain

My sis and I just got back from Spain and the only part of the trip I really enjoyed was our time on the Costa del Sol. We stayed in Marbella and I wouldn't stay anywhere else,I loved the city.Of course no two people will like the same thing. We stayed in a hotel called Los Monteros (a Meridian Hotel) <BR> It is a 5 star hotel, about 3 miles from the center of town so you really need a car. The beach isn't the best but I still liked the hotel. If you wanted to stay in the heart of the city I would suggest El Fuerte. Although only a 4 star hotel, it was our first choice but they were all booked. However,I read an article, in Spainair's in flight magazine on the flight over,on a new hotel called the Weston La Quint that was offering introductory prices that sounded great. I believe it was a 5 star hotel as well and had a golf course. While in Marbella we took several day trip-- Gibraltar (1hr away) and Granda (a little over 2 hrs)and it is only 45 min. from the airport so I think Marbella is in a great location. The regio around Marbella on the Costa del Sol is indeed the most attractive. Besides the hotels and clubs there are several time share projects where you can rent villas at reasonable prices, many of them offering sports accomodation. The region has 57 golf courses, the attractive old city centre of Marbella and the marina of Puerto Banus are nearby. There are numerous restaurants, clubs, bars, disco's, etc. A car is indeed recommended. <BR> <BR>Alicante is at the Costa Blanca and they have a skyline of highrise buildings. Don't know when you will be going but in the winter they have more sunshine due to the micro climate. I would however not want to stay there. <BR>

If you like Miami Beach you'll like Costa Del Sol. I went north from Madrid and it's beautiful there. It's not so touristy and the pace is more relaxed. There are pretty little towns to visit as well. San Sebastian (a film festival city) is a beautifully preserved old city that is cosmopolitan too. I'm away from home otherwise I could give you the names of places I visited. I spent 3 weeks driving around Spain and enjoyed every minute of it.

Try Nerja -- it is, of course, somewhat touristy, but still preserves the feel of a historic town. It is AMAZINGLY beautiful! Also, beware of the jellyfish when swimming in the water on the southern coast of Spain! And, one last thing, be mindful of your possessions all the time while at the beach. My friend and I placed our knapsack and next to our towels for one second while going to test the water. When we got back, our bag was gone! It happens fast, so watch out!
