Hi, need help on planning tour to South Germany in mid March. we are planning to land in Munich and move towards Salzburg, Halstatt thru Alps, to Austria and back to Munich.
1. Whether the climate is okay during this time,
2. We need a ecconomical package and so suggest some less costly means of travel.
3. We are a couple with a 12 year old kid.
4. Pls also suggest some good and less costly apartments.

In general, people who frequent this website tend to research and plan their own trips, rather than using a package. That said, there may be those who use package tours.

You really do need to get a guidebook. I usually use Rick Steves, Frommers or Fodors. I have an old Rick Steves that lists temperatures for Frankfurt as lows of 35F, highs of 49F, and 22 days of no rain.

Bavaria is undoubtedly colder than Frankfurt, and there will probably be snow, but that's just a guess.

As far as the weather - in the mountains it will be winter (as in skiing) and in other parts stillquite chilly (not sure where you are from or what you would expect then).

Not sure what you mean by package. Are you looking for a tour? (IMHO not a good idea with a tween likely to be bored stiff).

As for travel - cheaper than what? There are all sorts of special offers for train service in Germany - just check out bahn.de. But, depending on your exact itinerary, a car may be most convenient - and they are less expensive in Germany than in most of europe.

Thanks for your replies; I need to surf thru the guidebooks for sure.
We are travelling from India. I think self planned tour would definitely be better. Need more info on the route as well as car rental services and B&B schemes.

Monasp, I doubt that you would find any traditional companies offering tours of Bavaria in March - too early.

I just got back from Germany. You might consider staying in apts. One we stayed at outside Salzburg is www.neuwirtgut.at/
If you get to Rothenburg, I can recommend www.froehlich-rothenburg.de/

In Germany, you can travel with the Bavaria ticket for only 29 euro - great savings.

Feeling March is not the correct time (too early) to visit Bavaria. Seriouly thinking of postponing it till May. Thanks for inputs and also thanks to bigtyke for sharing apts details. They are worth considering. Also Rothenburg seems a nice town and will try and include in the itineray.

We went to Bavaria last May and thought it was a perfect time to be there.

A poster above mentioned the $29.00 train fair-this is $29.00
for an entire group of up to 5 persons in the defined area of Bavaria. It is good for all day and evening but can only be
used after 9:00 in the morning. It is a great money saver.
For example, you could travel from Munich to Nurenberg for a day trip for only $ 29.00 for the entire family round trip!
Hard to beat!
