Base in southern Spain...?
We are looking to base for a week in southern Spain (after staying in Seville) and are choosing between Mijas, Marbella, and Estepona as locations for our December trip. We will be doing day trips from there. Besides a definite visit to Granada, possibilites include Antequera, white towns (although we will have already stayed in Ronda), etc. May I have your suggestions on the best place to base ourselves.

I did this area for at Christmas (this year). The weather was sunny (and in the 70s for the whole 7 days I was there. My base was Benalmedina (famed for its fish restaurants) next to Torremolinas. From there I visited Fuengirola, Mijas Village, Seville, Gibraltar, and Malaga. A few of the restaurants in Torremolinas were closed for the season, but there is still plenty of choice. Personally, I would base yourself in Marbella, or Malaga itself. Marbella is more attractive than Benalmedina and with many restaurants open (likewise Malaga). Old Mijas village is absolutely beautiful if you can get accommodation there, whereas I wasn't struck on Mijas new town. Hope this helps.

We've stayed in Marbella twice and liked it very much for a base in the area. I would happily stay there again. I think Mijas might be a bit out of the way and Esptepona is probably a good base as well.
IMO Torremolinos was way too built up, crowded, and not very nice and I didn't like Fuenginola either. I wouldn't stay at either.
One of my favorite white villages was Vejar de la Frontera. Also, if you haven't been to Nerja, I recommend it, as well as the nearby caves and white village of Frigiliana.
