Barcelona, Madrid, Granada & Seville accommodations
Looking for conveniently located, very clean & safe lodging in Seville, Granada, Madrid & Barcelona that is economical for 2 women friends traveling in November. Would consider hotel, b & b or hostals. Any suggestions and booking sites would be appreciated.

Hola
Madrid: We stayed at the Marlasca Hostal - http://www.hostalmarlasca.net - in the Puerta del Sol area. In the same street is the Cantabrico Hostal - http://www.hostalcantabricomadrid.com -which is a bit cheaper and includes breakfast. Both are in excellent location.
Seville: Try the Hotel Amadeus - http://www.sevilla5.com/hotels/amadeus.html in the gorgeous Barrio Santa Cruz area.
Granada: The Casa del Aljarife - http://www.granadainfo.com/most/english.htm is in the old Moorish quarter of Albaicin. Very atmospheric.
Barcelona: The Girona Hostal - http://www.hostalgirona.com - is in the Eixample area and looks a good deal. The Central Hostal - http://www.hostalcentralbarcelona.com is a nice choice. For a little more you can stay in the lovely Gothic Quarter at this cool hotel Banys Orientals - http://www.hotelbanysorientals.com
Hope this helps.

This was my review of the lodging from our trip to Spain (May 2004).
Hostal Macarena (Madrid)
http://www.hostalsilserranos.com/ing...lMacarena.html
The hotel staff was very nice and helpful. The lady in charge during the morning shift (Ana) didn’t speak more than a few words of English, but luckily we’re proficient enough in Spanish. Fernando, the night guy, was fluent in English. Our room had a balcony that faced Cava de San Miguel, so it was a little noisy if we opened the balcony doors. But once they were closed, about 80% of the outside noise was blocked out. We paid 63.99 euro per night (VAT included). The room was pretty small with an even smaller bathroom! You can knock your head on the sink while sitting on the toilet! But overall, it was clean and the location was good. I would stay there again.
Apt. on Arfe (Sevilla)
http://www.sevilla5.com/apartments/index.html
We rented an apt. for our stay in Sevilla (59 euro/night). We wanted #3 but we ended up with #4. This apt. is on the 3rd floor (American – European 2nd floor) without an elevator/lift. There’s also a metal type stairway to get up to the upstairs bedroom and bathroom. The location was great because we could see the Giralda from our bedroom window, but the apt. wasn’t as desirable. The metal type stairs were pretty dangerous (I almost tripped a couple of times because it was very steep). The toilet had a very bad odor that we couldn’t get rid of for the 4 days we were there (and we even bought air fresheners to get rid of the smell). My theory is that something died inside the tank, but I was too chicken to find out. I would stay in the same complex again, but would definitely try to get #2 or #3 on the second floor. The staff (Alicia) was very helpful and returned all my emails in a very timely manner.
I don't have a recommendation for Granada because the place we stayed at (Hostal Meridiano) was horrible.
Have you tried www.madridman.com? I got a lot of helpful suggestions on that website. It's not just for Madrid (even though the name seems to imply that). Have a great time on your trip!

i agree with worldinabag. stay at the hotel amadeus. it is lovely. made our stay in seville even more memorable. the bedroom is of decent size, cozy and comfortable. they have a rooftop terrace where you can have wine and watch the sun set. i loved the hotel amadeus and can't wait to go back soon.

Here's my 2 cents, based on our trip in the summer of 2000:
Madrid: Bauza Hotel & Restaurant (good location, contempo/Scandanavian decor, nice/convenient resto)
Seville: Las Casas de la Juderia (good location, charming, nice courtyard)
Granada: Hotel Guadalupe (convenient location right across from Alhambra, nice comfy room)
Hope this helps. We loved Spain.

You haven't given us a price goal.
We stayed at Casa de la Juderia in Seville. Excellent hotel in a great area.
In Barcelona we stayed directly on Placa catalunya at the H10 - Placa Catalunya. Excellent Hotel, great location terrific buffet breakfast in the 2nd floor breakfast room overlooking the square.

Re Granada: we just returned and if you can get in, IMO the very best place to stay is at the Alhambra parador which has the best location of all..on the grounds of the Alhambra. BUT it is the most popular parador in Spain and often books up months in advance.

My two cents
Sevilla: we stayed in the same apartment building that tcl mentions, but in #5. We loved it. Very economical, wonderful location (a cab can drop you at the door, unlike in Santa Cruz area) and we had no strange smell. You can find it and other options on www.sevilla5.com. I believe there is a three night minimum for renting the apts. My other choice for Seville would have been Amadeus.
Madrid: budget recommendation:
Hostal Adriano www.adrianohostal.com
Like the Seville apartment on Arfe, no elevator (and more floors to climb -- the will help you carry your luggage up) but equally economical and spotlessly clean. Is in an area that has heavy nightlife but I would consider it very safe. Not sure what age you are or what kind of "marcha" you are after, but it is right in the heart of a great nightlife/bar district. If you want something sedate and quiet, this is probably not your place. That said, it is on the top floor of the building and the street noise didn't bother me (there are probably several reasons for that ;-) )
I recommend looking at www.maribelsguides.com for more recommendations in Barcelona, Madrid and Seville.
Good luck and happy travels!
